Abattoir project would give Qld beef producers market alternatives, says Govt

The proposed Hughenden abattoir project in North Queensland has been granted Major Project Status by the Federal Government, in a move designed to deliver an estimated 300 regional jobs and provide beef producers with market alternatives.

CNVM Investment Pty Ltd says it plans to invest more than $100 million to develop an integrated processing plant and feedlot near the town.

Major Project Status means the project’s backers will now receive help coordinating Commonwealth approvals for the project, a government statement this afternoon said.

The project, supported by the Flinders Shire Council and the North Beef producer group, plans to develop a 900ha site near the Town Common, about 5km from Hughenden.

Acting Minister for Industry, Innovation and Science, Michaelia Cash said the project had major potential benefits for the region.

“This plant (if constructed) will have the capacity to process around 180,000 head of cattle per year and frozen meat will be exported to the Asia-Pacific region,” Minister Cash said.

“The project is estimated to provide more than 300 full time jobs in a region impacted by high youth unemployment. It will also create opportunities for indigenous workers in the area.”

Major project status for the Hughenden abattoir project was granted under the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science’s Major Project Facilitation program, which is administered by the Major Projects Facilitation Agency.

Hughenden is one of a number of sites proposed for new regional Queensland abattoirs over the past three years.

It’s about time! This is great news. But with half of Australia’s cattle population in the northern part of Australia we need more than one new inland abattoir. No doubt the providers of the capital for this investment know what they’re doing. Good luck to them! But what about the NT and the top end of WA. A lot of the cattle there are an awfully long way from the coastal abattoirs.
