A QUEENSLAND Charolais bull sold for $265,000 this morning, setting a new breed record and more than doubling the previous benchmark set only a week earlier.

The Price family’s annual sale at their Moongool Charolais Stud, Yuleba smashed the previous benchmark, selling two-year-old poll bull Moongool Revolution to David and Lynette Whitechurch, Fourway Stud, Inverell NSW.

By Full French sire GDX Parfaint, Revolution was 1168kg at 24 months and carried one of the largest eye muscle scans in the catalogue at 163sq cm. he was the heaviest bull in the catalogue, displaying a 400-day EBV of +31kg, and 600-day of +47kg.

The new record Charolais is the third highest price for any beef breed sold in Australia, sitting only behind Brahman ($325,000) and Angus ($280,000), but ahead of Wagyu ($240,000) and Droughtmaster ($220,000). Some have suggested this afternoon it might be a world record for a Charolais bull.

The result continues a recent sequence of breed records set during September (see earlier story).

Revolution’s new owners the Whitechurch family have been repeat buyers of elite Moongool genetics, paying $83,000 to set an earlier breed record at the 2017 sale.

Underbidders on the new record holder were Geoff and Ryan Holzwart and family, Bauhinia Park, Emerald QLD who bought a red factor bull later in the sale for $40,000.

In total Moongool sold all 74 Charolais bulls offered this morning, averaging $26,486. It did not quite match Palgrove’s Charolais sale average record set last week of $28,171, but still ranked among the highest sale average prices the breed has ever produced.

Four Ways’ own sale on 5 September averaged $24,203 for a total clearance of 27 Charolais bulls.

This morning’s sale more than doubled the previous Charolais breed record of $115,000 set only a week earlier at Palgrove’s 2022 annual event. Prior to that, the breed record was only $83,000 for a Moongool bull, also bought by the Whitechurch family.
