Teys to phase-out pre-2013 NVDs from March next year

Jon Condon, 06/11/2014

BEEF processor Teys Australia has announced that it will follow the recent recommendation of the Red Meat Advisory Council in accepting only 2013-version National Vendor Declarations from March 1 next year.

Teys Cargill LogoIn a statement, Teys said the decision was in response to international buyer expectations and would “protect markets for both processors and producers alike.”

The move aligns with a similar policy announced three weeks ago by another large processor, JBS Australia. See beef Central’s earlier JBS announcement story here.

Teys Australia general manager corporate affairs Tom Maguire said while some processors were phasing-out pre-2013 documentation earlier, Teys wanted to provide suppliers with as much time as possible to comply.

“We understand that even small changes take time and we will assist our producers wherever we can,” he said.

The industry as a whole has strongly supported the use of a nationally consistent livestock NVD and the 2013 edition is the only version that explains stock status to all importing countries without ambiguity.

In a recent statement, the Red Meat Advisory Council MAC said as a result of international market development and to ensure ongoing market access for Australian livestock and livestock products, RMAC supported the industry-wide use of only the 2013 cattle, sheep and goat LPA NVDs… from 1 February 2015.

Mr Maguire said compliance was important, as Teys could not guarantee processing of stock after March 1, 2015 that were not on a correctly-completed current NVD.

“We will not be in a position to process cattle after that date if the NVD is an older version, so we urge producers to destroy pre-2013 documentation at that time,” he said.

  • The 2013 edition of the LPA NVD is recognisable by the pre-printed edition number (Cattle: C0413) located at the top left of the document, next to the title. This edition has been available to producers since December 2013.

Does this apply to domestic markets?

I presume producers are to be reimbursed for unused NVD books prior to 2013.

The beef cartel in action again forcing producers into more expense.
USA producers do not have to sign any NVD and are obtaining twice the price that we are. I ask which markets specifically will only accept the latest edition NVD.
