MLA members encouraged to secure full voting entitlements

Beef Central, 12/08/2019

MEAT & Livestock Australia members are being encouraged to return their Levies Notice to ensure they secure their full voting entitlement for any ballots and board elections held by MLA in 2019-20.

MLA Levies Notice packs have been sent to red meat producers across the country who are MLA members, offering them an opportunity to secure their full voting entitlements at MLA’s 2019 Annual General Meeting, based on the levies they paid in 2018-19.

To ensure members receive their full voting entitlement, they must complete and return their personalised Levy Notice by 23 September 2019.

MLA Managing Director Jason Strong encouraged all MLA members to take up their full voting entitlement.

“It is important that red meat producers are actively engaged in this important process and take every opportunity to have an input into how MLA is investing their levies,” Mr Strong said.

“The Levies Notice is the first of two packs that MLA members will receive over the coming months. In October, members will also receive their AGM Pack which contains their voting entitlement, the notice of MLA’s 2019 AGM and a proxy form for use by those who cannot attend the meeting in person.”

MLA’s 2019 AGM will be held on Wednesday, 20 November, in Tamworth NSW, as part of Red Meat 2019.

Red Meat 2019 is the Australian red meat industry’s flagship event, held over three days from 18 to 20 November, and includes producer tours, forums, the latest research, innovation and marketing insights and a trade show, with technology demonstrations and networking opportunities.

The business of the MLA AGM may include:

  • the consideration of the annual Financial Report, Directors’ Report, Auditor’s Report and any resolutions
  • the election of Directors
  • the appointment of the auditor
  • questions or comments from members about the management of MLA.

Red Meat 2019 is open to all members of the red meat and livestock industry. The full program for the event will be released later this month on the Red Meat 2019 website, including registration details.

An AGM is where the shareholders can question the progress and performance of the company
Until all reasonable questions are allowed any AGM of MLA will continue to be at best a rubber stamping exercise or really just a farce
Why is it that the ABA seems to be the only body that asks the searching questions

Every year MLA put out a press release to encourage members to obtain their voting entitlements. Every year less farmers do .This is because it is increasingly seen as an exercise in futility.
We should have automatic voting entitlements issued by MLA to every levy payer. Warren Truss instructed the MLA to do this in 2006.Automatic voting entitlements was one of the recommendations from the Senate Enquiry in 2014.
Levies are collected under the tax act and as such their source should be identified .
I make a prediction, all motions put forward by the MLA and peak councils will be carried as they are every year.
As a MLA shareholder I will be asking some questions at Tamworth in November .Last years accounts were far from satisfactory and I suspect this year to be the same.
