Free webinar on changes to livestock branding and earmarks in Qld

Beef Central, 12/01/2023

age: Agforce

Proposed changes to the future of livestock brands and earmarks in Queensland will be detailed in a free webinar commencing at 5pm AEST this afternoon.

The Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries will explain in detail why it started the consultation, the options of potential future systems, and most importantly the financial impacts.

The two proposed options for future legislation are:

  1. Retaining the current legislative requirements for branding (the status quo) with the addition of a renewal fee, or
  2. Providing choice about branding under a streamlined system with a renewal fee under two sub-options:
  • 2A – Giving owners the option of an exemption from mandatory branding of cattle or pigs (choice to opt-out)
  • 2B – Giving owners the option of voluntary branding of cattle or pigs (choice to opt-in).

The webinar is designed to provide attendees with the opportunity to ask questions, which AgForce will use to form the basis of our draft submission on behalf of members.

The webinar will also advise attendees on how to submit formal feedback directly to the Department, if you would like to do so.

Register through Eventbrite.

Feedback can also be provided via this survey.

The consultation finishes at 5pm on Sunday 15 January 2023.

I believe all cattle and horses should be identified with either a fire or freeze brand, as there is no other permanent way to identify animals. NLIS tags are too easy to cut out and replace, which is what cattle theves are doing, there isn’t enough done to identify cattle passing through the saleyard and meat work systems, tracking animals with the NLIS system is not enough. Brands should also be used.
I personally have had to travel to identify animals that I sold and hadn’t been visually
identified in anyway so to the person who had the animals in his yard, who read the brand and the NLIS tag, phone me because I was the owner of the brand and PIC number on the tag.
