Yarding 5000 Change -1580
Rain in the forecast impacted supply and numbers dropped significantly. The overall quality remained secondary, with trade and export cattle limited. Regular export and domestic buyers were represented along with a few new feedlot orders, and further feedlot orders commenced mid-sale targeting steers weighing above 330kg. Restockers were active throughout, sourcing all breeds for northern buyers and for Gippsland in Victoria along with local competition.
The sale for feeder cattle and lighter restocking types proved volatile, with prices showing price spikes as trading progressed. Steers destined to return to paddocks held broadly firm, trading from 408–550c/kg and averaging about $1,212/head. Feeder steers in the 330–400kg range were well supplied and fetched 430–528c/kg. Numbers of medium feeders fell compared with the prior sale and, with more buyers chasing weight, values strengthened as the sale progressed, trading from 406–496c/kg. Light weight feeder heifers were keenly sought with the Angus portion pushing up prices by 13c/kg to average 441c/kg. Heavy feed steers were scarce and made between 488–493c/kg. Trade steers and heifers generally sold in the 422–454c/kg band.
On the export side, suitable steers were limited. Heavy steers and bullocks sold from 410–482c/kg. Heavy heifers with shape sold from 410-475c/kg. Declining heavy cow supply pushed prices higher, led by southern exporters. Heavy cows lifted 10c to range from 372–425 c/kg. Leaner cows under 520kg were in strong demand and the better covered made from 318–385c/kg. Store cows sold from 322-375c/kg.
