Despite the weekend’s rain, the market saw another significant yarding of cattle at Wagga this morning. Most of the cattle presented were secondary types, with only limited numbers meeting the requirements of both domestic and export processors.

The rain had a noticeable impact on prices during the sale, and most classes exhibited a trend of increasing values.

This uptick was largely fuelled by restockers, who were inspired by the widespread rainfall, leading to heightened interest from northern buyers this week. As the market unfolded, there was a notable increase in feedlot orders, particularly as more orders were placed mid-morning. The demand remained robust, contributing to a strengthening market as the day progressed. Restockers were particularly active, eager to purchase across a variety of categories.

In terms of good quality trade cattle, there were a few more vealers offered this week that caught the attention of trade buyers, who were willing to pay premium prices for better-covered types, ranging from 440-492c/kg. Trade steers and heifers also experienced stronger demand, with prices trading between 450-498c/kg. Notably, the local and northern restockers significantly influenced the market, causing a 11c increase for steers weighing 200-280kg, which averaged around $1334/head. Heifers in that same weight range averaged $1055, reflecting a dearer trend of 27c/kg.

The interest in feed heifers rose driven by the arrival of extra orders in the market. Feed heifers weighing between 330- 400kg saw a notable increase of 25c, trading between 440 and 488c/kg, while those in the 280-330kg category peaked at 480c/kg. Feeder steers weighing 330-400kg attracted a large group of buyers, with prices ranging from 430-530c/kg. Medium weight feeder steers traded between 420 -505c/kg, while heavy feeder steers were somewhat limited, fetching prices from 440-495c/kg.

On the export front, the market came up short with only a limited supply. Heavy steers to suit processors sold 16c dearer due to the reduced supply. Bullocks were also scarce making from 422-480c/kg. The cow market saw numbers rise to just over 2000 head. A large contingent of processors and restockers were operating, with restockers underpinning all the leaner grades of younger cows. Heavy cows improved 7c to average 402c/kg. Leaner coes under 520kg were keenly sought by a big group of buyers. Cows sold to processrs made from 334-388c/kg. Cows back to the paddock sold from 334-382c/kg.
