Roma sale 7 Mar 2023: Yearling steers firm to dearer

Overall quality was good on steers but mixed on heifers, with most cattle sourced from local areas.

Additional buyer support from the Central Highlands and Western Queensland helped keep prices firm to slightly dearer on yearling steers however quality and prices reduced for yearling heifers.

Grown steers and heifers to the processor were firm while medium primes cows eased by 10c/kg. Light weight restocker steers saw an improvement of 15c selling to 536.2c to average 483c and steers 280 to 330kg sold to a similar trend lifting 17c to a top of 512.2c averaging 463c/kg.

Medium weight steers to feed made to 446.2c while restockers paid up to 448.2c to average 413c/kg. Heavy yearling feeders steers held firm this week selling to 404.2c to average 374c/kg.

Light weight restocker heifers eased this week in a similar trend as most yards across the state. Light weight restocker heifers sold to a top of 418.2 to average 341c, while ā€˜Dā€™ muscle pens averaged 278c/kg. Medium weight feeder heifers however, saw improvements of 17c, selling to 370.2c to average 357c/kg.

Grown prime steers held firm on last week selling to 328.2c to average 323c/kg. Medium cows to the processor struggled to maintain the prices of the previous week easing 10c, selling to 277.2c to average 259c while heavy prime cows over 520kg held firm selling to 286.2c to average 274c/kg.

Weaner steers under 200kg topped at 536c/kg and averaged 530c/kg, weaner steers in the 200-280kg range reached 536c/kg and averaged 463c/kg. Steers in the 280-330kg range reached 512c/kg and averaged 437c/kg, and steers in the 330-400kg range reached 448c/kg and averaged 385c/kg. Feeder steers in the 400-500kg range topping at 404c/kg and averaging 355c/kg.

Close Marketing No 2, East Kilima sold Angus cross steers to 508c/kg, reaching a top of $1,461 to average $1,408. The Charolais cross heifers sold to 380c/kg, reaching a top of $1,084 to average $987.
