Roma store sale 10 Dec 2019: Competition remains firm for quality lines

Cattle were drawn from the usual supply area as producers manage the continuing dry conditions.

A fair buyer panel was operating but not all processors were present. Steers and heifers again dominated the yarding and the quality of the yarding was mixed however competition remained firm for quality lines of cattle presented especially in the feeder range.

Prices mostly rose across the steers while overall heifers fluctuated.

Medium weight lighter condition cows experienced improvements with an increase in restocker competition, while heavy weight cows fell when compared to the previous week. Light weight yearling steers to feed or background rose by 41c/kg. Medium weight yearling steers under 330kg to feed improved by 53c/kg.

Quality medium weight yearling steers under 400kg to feed rose by 5c while the small sample of heavy weight yearling steers to feed rose by 20c/kg. Medium weight yearling heifers under 280kg to restockers rose by 4c to 6c, while medium weight heifers under 330kg to restockers fell by 3c/kg. Medium weight 2 score cows rose by 5c to 21c while heavy weight cows fell by 6c to 38c/kg.

A large sample of light weight yearling steers under 280kg to feed or background sold to 308.2c to average 291c/kg. Medium weight yearling steers under 330kg to feed sold to 300.2c to average 287c/kg. Medium weight yearling steers under 400kg to feed also made to 300.2c to average 287c/kg. Heavy weight yearling steers over 400kg to feed made to 314.2c to average 295 c/kg with a small sample of quality heavy weight yearling steers reaching a top of 316.2 c/kg. The largest sample of medium weight yearling heifers under 280kg to restockers sold to 264.2c to average 236c/kg. Medium weight yearling heifers under 330kg to restockers sold to 248.2c to average 241c/kg. A quality pen of heavy weight yearling heifers sold to 270.2c to average 270c/kg. The largest sample of medium weight grown steers sold to 252.2c to average 251c/kg.

Grown heifers under 540kg made to a top of 240c to average 224c/kg. Medium weight 2 score cows sold to 188.2c to average 174c, while medium weight 3 score cows sold to 210c to average 195c/kg. Heavy weight 3 score cows sold to 210c to average 201c, while the heavy weight 4 score cows made to 210c to average 204c/kg.

Steers in the 280- 350kg range reached 304c/kg and averaged 276c/kg, and steers in the 350-400kg range reached 308c/kg and averaged 265c/kg. Feeder steers in the 400-550kg range topping at 316c/kg and averaging 265c/kg.

PD & SE Joliffe, Walhallow, Amby sold Santa heifers to 262c/kg, reaching a top of $1,070 to average $1,006.

U5J Pty Ltd T/A Taylor Grazing, Kevington, Injune sold Angus cross heifers to 262c/kg, reaching a top of $760 to average $713.

Killarney Park Grazing, Killarney Park, Tambo sold Santa cross heifers to 248c/kg, reaching a top of $762 to average $762.

Cows in the 300-400kg range reached 175c/kg and averaged 148c/kg, while cows in the 400kg-500kg range reached 200c/kg and averaged 173c/kg. Cows over 500kg topped at 210c/kg, averaging 191c/kg.
