Roma sale 1 Feb 2022: Rates rise in small yarding

Cattle were drawn from the South West Qld region with quality local lines yarded that included heavy steers and cows and calves in increased numbers.

A competitive buying panel of restockers and lot feeders was operating, and all regular processors were present, however not all were operating.

Overall the market mostly improved across the smaller yarding with fluctuations in places.

Medium weight steers under 330kg improved by 36c to 60c/kg. Heavy weight steers to feed eased by 1c/kg.

Heifers made good gains with light weight heifers improving by 6c to 95c, and the lead of the medium weight heifers improving by 7c to 98c/kg.

Medium weight prime cows improved by 14c, while heavy weight prime cows improved by 3c/kg.

Light weight yearling steers under 200kg made to a top of 914.2c to average 854c/kg. Yearling steers under 280kg to restockers also reached 914.2c to average 772c/kg. Medium weight yearling steers under 330kg to restockers sold to 762.2c to average 703c/kg. Yearling steers under 400kg to feed made to 726.2c to average 617c/kg. Heavy weight yearling steers to feed reached a top of 652.2c to average 549c/kg.

Light weight yearling heifers under 200kg to reached a top of 745.2c to average 720c/kg. Yearling heifers under 280kg to restockers made to 744.2c to average 680c/kg. Medium weight yearling heifers under 330kg to restockers sold to 704.2c to average 658c/kg. Yearling heifers under 400kg to restockers reached a top of 680.2c to average 645c/kg.

The best of the grown heifers made to 461.2c/kg.

Cows were yarded in increased numbers which saw medium weight prime cows to processors sell to 378.2c to average 361c/kg.

Heavy weight prime cows reached a top of 380.2c to average 366c/kg. Heavy weight bulls reached a top of 330c to average 323c/kg.

PTIC red tag cows sold at open auction for $2550/head, while the increased number of cows and calves made to a top of $3700/unit.

Weaner steers under 220kg topped at 914c/kg and averaged 767c/kg, weaner steers in the 220-280kg range reached 914c/kg and averaged 718c/kg. Steers in the 280- 350kg range reached 762c/kg and averaged 690c/kg, and steers in the 350-400kg range reached 670c/kg and averaged 585c/kg. Feeder steers in the 400-550kg range topping at 652c/kg and averaging 541c/kg. Cow and calves hit $3,700/unit.

D & K Twist, Juandah Downs, Mungallala sold Charolais cross steers to 824c/kg reaching a top of $2,328 to average $2,259.

JW Blackburn, Mt Bindango, Roma sold Charolais steers to 794c/kg reaching a top of $2,333 to average $2,228. The Charolais heifers sold to 664c/kg reaching a top of $1,900 to average $1,722.

Albury Pastoral Co, sold Santa cross steers to 762c/kg reaching a top of $2,400 to average $2,179.

Lachlan Bryant, Albury, Mungallala sold Charolais cross steers to 762c/kg reaching a top of $2,274 to average $2,159.

AT & PL Byrne, Pinelands, Injune sold Angus steers to 758c/kg reaching a top of $2,806 to average $2,200. The Angus heifers sold to 686c/kg reaching a top of $1,914 to average $1,914.

EW Hoffman, Boreview, Wallumbilla sold Santa cross steers to 744c/kg reaching a top of $2,531 to average $2,355.
