Roma store 12 Dec 2017: Year ends on firm to dearer note

Beef Central, 13/12/2017

Yarding 6200 Change 508

The final sale until mid January saw an increase in supply. Young cattle made up the bulk of the offering with a limited supply of well finished grown steers and bullocks. There was a fair supply of cows. The overall quality of the offering was mixed with fewer of the larger lines. Cattle were drawn from a wide area to the west and into the Territory. There was a strong field of restocker and backgrounder buyers along with the usual lotfeeders and processors. With no sales for a month, demand from restockers was strong throughout, but more so on lighter weights. Feedlotters and processors also competed strongly.

Market trends through the young cattle were mostly firm, however there were some dearer sales. Light weight steer calves returning to the paddock sold from 338c to 432c to be up to 6c/kg dearer. The heifer portion reached 386c/kg. Light weight yearling steers to restockers sold from 300c to 406c/kg, with breed and buyer preferences playing a role in the large price variation. Medium weight yearling steers to restock and feed saw a mostly firm trend, while the heavy weight feeders were 2c to 3c/kg dearer in places. Yearling heifers to restock and feed sold on a firm market trend with some sales cheaper. Light weights sold from 272 to 354c, to average around 324c/kg. Heifers over 280kg sold from 254c to 324c/kg.

Heavy steers and bullocks were in limited supply and sold firm to dearer, making from 260c to 274c/kg. Heavy weight feeder steers remained firm. The best of the heavy weight cows experienced little change with heavy 3 and 4 scores selling from 215c to 230c/kg.
