Dalby sale 22 Nov 2017: Feeder steer prices rise

Beef Central, 23/11/2017

Yarding 4043 Changb -1284

Wide spread rain in some of the Western areas restricted some movements of cattle, although there were consignments from the Channel country, resulting in a smaller yarding of 4,043 head, down by 1,284. Yearlings were well supplied, while bullocks and cow numbers were down. Quality was fairly good with some good runs of well-bred cattle suitable for feeders and backgrounders, and local restockers were also active in the market.

The market was generally strong with medium weight feeder steers selling 10c dearer, topping at 334c, to average 319c, and heavy feeder steers averaged at 315c/kg. Feeder heifers were 5c dearer, topping at 313c, to average 300c/kg. Light yearling cattle continued to meet keen restocker demand with light restocker yearling steers selling from 280c to 364c, and light restocker yearling heifers ranged from 270c to 358c/kg.

The export cattle were made up of a fair yarding of bullocks and steers and a smaller penning of cows. Quality was mixed with several pens of well finished steers and bullocks offered. There was a mixed yarding of cows consisting of some heavy consignments, and a fair number of light and medium weight cows. Bullocks were down by 3c to average 201c, while heavy steers were 10c cheaper to average 288c/kg. Heifers were 3c dearer and sold to 285c/kg. The cow market saw medium weights hold firm to average 232c, however heavy cows were down by 7c and sold to 246c to average 240c/kg.

Grant Daniel Long report:

Numbers were down on the previous week by 1,300 head. There were some very good lines of cows, bullocks. Good lines of heavy and light feeder steers. A big percentage of feeder steers were in a forward condition. The market was firm to dearer from export right thru to re-stockers.
