Dalby sale 23 March 2022: Heavy cattle sell to softer rates

Guest Author, 24/03/2022

Yarding 3417 Change -107

There was a small reduction in supply to 3,417 head at Dalby, and included in the lineup were 196 head from New South Wales, plus 380 from far Western Queensland.

All the usual buyers were in attendance and operating.

Prices generally could not maintain the levels of the previous week. Buyers operated selectively, with only quality lines of young light weight cattle receiving strong support from restockers. Yearling steers to feed averaged 7c to 10c/kg less.

Yearling heifers to feed also sold to a cheaper trend. Heavy grown steers and bullocks sold close to the previous weeks level. Cows to export processors averaged 15c to 21c/kg cheaper.

However cows returning to the paddock averaged 5c/kg better.

Light weight yearling steers returning to the paddock made to a top of 854c with a good sample averaging 685c/kg. Yearling steers to feed for the domestic market averaged from 588c to 638c with a very occasional sale to 756c/kg. Heavy weight yearling steers to feed made to 609c with a good sample averaging 537c/kg.

Light weight yearling heifers returning to the paddock or background made to 750c to average 627c/kg. Yearling heifers to feed averaged from 547c to 558c with sales to 620c, with some to restockers reaching 670c/kg. Heavy weight yearling heifers to feed made to 546c to average 494c, with some to the trade at 480c/kg. Heavy grown steers to export processors made to 442c to average 431c, and the bullock portion made to 446c to average 430c/kg. Full mouth bullocks made to 412c/kg. Medium weight plain condition cows sold to a top of 388c with a fair selection averaging 365c/kg. Good heavy weight cows to export processors made to 381c to average 372c/kg.

Heavy weight bulls made to 388c/kg to return $4018/head.

Cows and calves made to $3675/unit.

PTIC cows made to $1910/head.

Grant Daniel Long report

Similar yarding this week. Heavy cattle sold slightly softer, raising fuel costs likely a factor in that. Overall, still a strong market. Yearling steers made up to 854c/kg and yearling heifers made to 750c/kg.
