THE Australian Lot Feeders Association – the peak body representing the interests of the nation’s grainfed beef producers – has a new president following ALFA’s annual general meeting this week.
The association’s eighteenth president is Grant Garey, general manager of feedlots with Teys Australia, one of the largest lotfeeders in the country.
Mr Garey has sat on the ALFA board since 2005, including recent terms as vice-president.
He succeeds Barb Madden, from Smithfield Cattle Co at Proston, who steps down after three years as president. Mrs Madden will remain on the board as immediate past president.
After completing a Bachelor of Rural Science degree at the University of New England, Mr Garey began his career in lotfeeding in 1995 at Sandalwood near Dalby, before moving to Cargill’s Jindalee feedlot in the NSW Riverina in 2002. Following the Teys-Cargill merger in 2011, he became Teys feedlots general manager in 2012. Teys operates three yards with combined capacity of 67,000 head at Condamine, Qld; Charlton, Victoria; and Jindalee NSW.
Early in his career he won the prestigious ALFA Young Lot Feeder of the Year Award in 2000.
He has held various committee positions since joining the ALFA board in 2005, including chairing the R&D, Events, and Marketing committees, as well as acting as vice president and chair of ALFA’s Audit, Risk & Remuneration Committee.
Mr Garey said he was honoured to take on the President’s role and focus on continuing to grow ALFA’s position as the voice in the cattle feedlot industry, advocating for its members, and promoting best practices.
Vice president Tom Green from Thomas entered the feedlot industry in 2012 and has built a successful career working within vertically integrated beef businesses.
Following seven years working with Thomas Foods International overseeing its Southern Cross lotfeeding enterprise, he started in a new role with Camm Agriculture Group as general manager at Wonga Plains feedlot in early 2024.
Mr Green was named the ALFA Young Lot Feeder of the Year in 2017 and received a Nuffield Scholarship in 2019, before joining the ALFA Board in 2020.
Combining this experience with being raised on the land and having a practical approach has resulted in his strong passion for food production, sustainability, business, emerging technologies and finance.

Congratulations Grant. A very significant role in a very significant organisation that is critical to the success of the Australian Beef Industry. You are following in the footsteps of some great industry leaders, and have been in the wings of the leadership team for sometime now. Your steady hand and thoughtful leadership will serve both ALFA and our Industry into the future very well.
Smart choice. ALFA will be in good hands.
