NVLX Wodonga 23 Aug 2016: Quality lifts, prices vary

A better quality yarding of cattle at NVLX Wodonga created some varied price trends this week. The market showed gains on some categories, but losses on others in a similar size yarding of 1,470 head.

The best price recorded was 402c/kg for light weight vealer steers returning to the paddock. The better finished milk calves were quoted 10c dearer by the National Livestock Reporting service. European vealers and their crosses made from 363-399c/kg. Any light weight milk calves which lacked finish sold mostly to feedlot buyers, selling unchanged for the better shaped pens. The fresh well shaped calves to feedlots ranged from 361-368c/kg.

After some solid gains the last few weeks medium weight trade steers sold 15c cheaper making from 352-380c/kg. Lighter weight trade steers 330-400kg was keenly contested selling firm to record a top price of 399c/kg. The best of the medium weight trade heifers 400-500kg held firm but overall prices did soften 8c to average 359c/kg.

Secondary steers suitable to feed on sold to varying price trends particularly steers 400-500kg. Secondary steers lacked the competition from northern feedlots this week, which impacted on values by as much as 18c/kg to average 356c/kg. Well-bred lighter weight steers 330-400kg made from 340-386c slipping 6c/kg.

Secondary yearling heifers suitable to feed on were keenly contested by steady feedlot demand keeping prices firm. Yearling heifers 330-400kg sold from 348-355c to average 351c/kg.

There was steady demand from domestic and export buyers for heavy grown steers which left rates unchanged. Prices hit a high of 360c/kg while most of the better finished steers sold from 322-350c/kg.

After some strong price trends in past weeks the cow market gained more traction, with agents offering 450 cows and 46 bulls. Prices were in general 9-17c dearer. Heavy well finished cows offering buyers weight and yield made from 285-304c/kg. Leaner grades ranged from 243-298c/kg. Plainer cows sold from 195-238c/kg. Heavy bulls sold to steady demand making from 260-287c/kg.
