Parts of Queensland’s Gulf Country benefited from heavy rain brought by the remnants ex tropical cyclone Winston in the past week.

Recorded totals in the region included 116mm at Werrington Station in the Einasleigh/Georgetown region, 76mm at Gregory Springs north of Hughenden, 76mm at Burketown, 53mm at Cloncurry, 36mm at Richmond, 27mm at Hughenden, 25mm at Normanton, 24mm at Mt Isa and 23mm at Mt Garnet.

Mount Jukes on the Queensland coast north of Mackay, which has an annual rainfall average of around 1600mm (64 inches) and recorded half of that volume with 799mm (32 inches) falling in the past week.

Rainfall was recorded in northern and along the southern coast of Western Australia, the Northern Territory, most of the northern half, southwestern and southeastern Queensland, far northeastern and northwestern New South Wales, the Northwest Pastoral, western and eastern districts of South Australia, and a small part of eastern Victoria.

At the beginning of the week, a low pressure system located in the Coral Sea directed moist air flow onto the east coast of Queensland. The system tracked slowly northwards, producing a widespread cloudband with embedded thunderstorms. Moderate to heavy falls were recorded in northeastern New South Wales and along the southeast, central and north tropical Queensland coasts.

In the middle of the week, a broad trough of low pressure located across northern Australia produced isolated shower and thunderstorm activity, with light to moderate falls recorded in parts of the Gulf Country, the Top End of the Northern Territory and the Kimberley district of Western Australia.

A weak low and an associated trough near the south coast of Western Australia produced showers and thunderstorms with moderate rainfall totals recorded in the region.

In the last part of the week, the remnants of a decaying low pressure system located over the north tropical coast, directed a very moist, unstable onshore flow onto the coast and adjacent inland districts between Cape Tribulation and St Lawrence. An upper-level trough over the northern tropics also brought moderate falls to western Queensland, the Gulf Country, the north tropical coast and parts of the Top End.

A band of cloud and embedded thunderstorms extended from a broad area of low pressure over northern Western Australia and the west of the Northern Territory to South Australia. Light to moderate falls were recorded in the Kimberley, northwest, central and southern parts of the Northern Territory, and areas of the Northeast Pastoral district.

Rainfall totals between 100 mm and 200 mm were recorded in far northeastern New South Wales, and in the northern interior and parts of the east coast of Queensland. Falls in excess of 200 mm were recorded on the north tropical, central and Capricornia coasts of Queensland, and falls in excess of 500 mm were recorded along the central coast of Queensland, including the highest weekly total of 799 mm at Mount Jukes.

Rainfall totals between 50 mm and 100 mm were recorded in areas of the Kimberley, the Top End and central parts of the Northern Territory, the Cape York Peninsula, the northern interior, east coast and parts of southwest Queensland, and in an area of the Northwest Pastoral district in South Australia.

Rainfall totals between 10 mm and 50 mm were recorded across much of northern tropics, southern parts of the Northern Territory, and much of the northern half, southeast and far southwest of Queensland. Similar totals were recorded along the southern coast of Western Australia, the south coast and northwestern parts of South Australia, northwestern, northeastern and southeastern New South Wales and a small part of eastern Victoria.
