Weekly rainfall wrap, week ending 29 Sep 2015

Beef Central, 30/09/2015

2015-9-30-rainfall-mapRainfall over the past week was recorded along the coast from southeastern Queensland to East Gippsland in Victoria, in the north tropical Queensland coast, parts of the Top End and north, west and eastern Tasmania.

At the beginning of the week, a cold front and surface trough tracked over southeastern Australia. Deep, southerly winds behind the front brought showers and moderate rainfall along the central coast of New South Wales and to East Gippsland in Victoria until mid-week.

Isolated thunderstorms produced moderate rainfall totals over parts of the Top End in the middle of the week; while a moist, onshore airflow onto the north tropical coast of Queensland also produced moderate totals.

In the last part of the week, a deep southeasterly flow over the western Tasman Sea produced showers, with moderate rainfall totals recorded along the coast from southeast Queensland down to eastern Victoria, including the east coast of Tasmania. A surface trough extending from the Gulf Country to northern New South Wales generated thunderstorm activity with moderate to heavy rainfall totals recorded in the southeast of Queensland. At the end of the week, a low pressure system developed on a trough west of Tasmania, producing moderate rainfall across northern Tasmania as it tracked across the State.

Rainfall totals in excess of 50 mm were recorded in parts of the coast of New South Wales and in East Gippsland of Victoria. The highest weekly total of 151 mm was at Smiths Lake in New South Wales.

Rainfall totals between 10 mm and 50 mm were recorded in eastern Victoria, in eastern and western Tasmania, along the New South Wales east coast, parts of southeastern Queensland, and in parts of the Top End of the Northern Territory.

Most of Western Australia, the Northern Territory, South Australia, western Victoria, the area west of the Great Dividing Range in New South Wales, and all of Queensland away from the southeast and north tropical coast recorded little or no rainfall this week.
