Rainfall was mainly received over eastern and southern Australia in the past week, with snow in the southeastern mountains.

At the start of the week, a cold front over southern Western Australia and a cloudband extending from the northwest to the interior of the country brought light to moderate rainfall to the Pilbara and southern parts of Western Australia, southeastern coast in South Australia, and most of Tasmania.

The cold front and associated developing low pressure system moved across the Bight and Bass Strait, bringing widespread moderate to heavy rainfall with cold southerly winds to southeastern South Australia, much of Victoria, along the west of the slopes and inland New South Wales, and Tasmania by mid-week. Snow fall was reported in mountain areas.

From the second half of the week, a mid-level cloudband formed over northwest Western Australia and moved into the Northern Territory and South Australia. A cold front tracked the country’s southern coastline in the wake of a strong high pressure system moving across eastern Australia. Light to moderate rainfall was recorded in the Pilbara, southwest Western Australia, southeastern and northern parts of South Australia, adjacent southern parts of Northern Territory, and western Tasmania.

A low pressure system and associated cold front approached southwest Western Australia, bringing light to moderate rainfall to the region on the last day of the week.

Rainfall totals between 50 and 100 mm were recorded in western and eastern Tasmania, southern and north eastern parts of Victoria, the snowy mountains regions of New South Wales, the southeastern corner of South Australia, as well as inland parts of the Pilbara in Western Australia.

Totals in excess of 100 mm were recorded in mountain regions in western Tasmania, and isolated spots in Victoria’s northeast and the Snowy Mountains in New South Wales.

Rainfall totals between 10 mm and 50 mm were recorded in the Pilbara, interior of Western Australia, northern, southern and Flinders ranges in South Australia

Most of northern Australia apart from the tropical east coast, much of the southern parts of Western Australia, and inland western parts of South Australia recorded little or no rainfall this week.
