Early in the week, a cold front brought scattered showers to western and southern Tasmania.
During the week, persistent low-pressure troughs extending across the interior, the Queensland coast and along the west coast, triggered storms and widespread rainfall over northern Australia, the Queensland coast, particularly in the south-east, and most of the north and interior of Western Australia.
Weekly rainfall totals greater than 25 mm were recorded across northern and southern parts of the Northern Territory, most of Queensland, large parts of Western Australia, north-eastern New South Wales and western Tasmania.
Weekly rainfall totals of 50-100 mm were recorded across parts of the Northern Territory, Western Australia, eastern Queensland and western Tasmania.
Weekly rainfall totals greater than 100 mm were recorded in isolated areas of Arnhem and Tiwi districts in the Northern Territory, south-eastern Queensland and parts of the Pilbara and Gascoyne districts in Western Australia.
The highest weekly total (at a Bureau gauge) was 241 mm at Sarich’s Alert in Queensland, which included the highest daily total rainfall of 163mm in 24 hours to 9 am on 12 December.
