Weekly rainfall update + rain outlook 7 September 2022

Bureau of Meteorology, 07/09/2022

TROPICAL moisture combined with weather systems over the week to produce significant rainfall over large parts of the country.

Weekly rainfall totals exceeding 100 mm were recorded in inland areas of Western Australia and southern Queensland as well as along the northern coastline of New South Wales.

Monthly daily records were exceeded at many sites in these areas, which are usually dry at this time of the year.

In particular, north-west Western Australia typically receives monthly rainfall less than 5 mm during September with monthly totals above 10 mm occurring in less than 10% of years.

Large parts of the Gascoyne and the Pilbara in Western Australia, the southern half of Northern Territory and Queensland, north-east New South Wales, Victoria and western Tasmania recorded up to 50 mm of rain.

The highest weekly total at a Bureau gauge of 239.0 mm was recorded at Meldrum (Coolawarrah) in NSW’s Mid North Coast district.

Flood warnings were issued for catchments in the Gascoyne Coast and Southern Pilbara of Western Australia, and inland parts of eastern Australia.
