Weekly rainfall update + rainfall outlook 12 December 2023

On the 8 and 9 December, a cold front moved across south-eastern Australia and a low pressure system developed over eastern South Australia, bringing widespread rainfall to large parts of South Australia, Victoria, and south-eastern New South Wales.

There were isolated showers and thunderstorms in the tropics during the week.

The heaviest rainfall was recorded over parts of the Northern Territory and south-eastern South Australia, with a number of stations setting records for their wettest December day.

Weekly totals between 15 and 50 mm were recorded in large parts of the northern tropics, South Australia, Victoria, south-eastern New South Wales, and parts of Tasmania; within these, there were areas that had 50 to 100 mm for the week.

Weekly totals of 100 to 150 mm were recorded in pockets of the western Top End (Northern Territory) and Eyre Peninsula (South Australia).

The highest weekly total was 150.4 mm at Jabiru Airport, Northern Territory.

The highest daily rainfall total during the week of 91.6 mm was recorded at Kalumburu, Western Australia, in the 24 hours to 9am on 11
