Weekly rainfall update + rainfall outlook 11 Jan 2023

MOST of northern Australia experienced an active monsoon period, with widespread rain, thunderstorms and flooding. Ex-Tropical Cyclone Ellie brought heavy rainfall and major flooding in Northern Territory and northern Western Australia.

Weekly totals greater than 100 mm were recorded in large parts of the Kimberley and Northern Interior districts in Western Australia, the Lasseter, Tanami and Daly districts in Northern Territory, and most of northern Queensland. Within these there were regions that received more than 200 mm for the week, while the area around Broome and pockets of far-north Queensland received more than 300 mm.

The highest weekly total (at a Bureau gauge) of 526.4 mm was recorded at Broome Airport, WA; the highest daily total this week was 282.0 mm at Country Downs, WA, to 9am on the 4th.

Weekly totals of more than 50 mm were recorded in large parts of northern Australia and in pockets along the east coast.

Major Flooding continued across the Murray Darling Basin. Peak water flows have passed the South Australian Border causing major floods in South Australia. Moderate and Major flooding is occurring in parts of northern Western Australia, Northern Territory and Western Queensland.
