THE Bureau of Meteoroly is monitoring the possible development of two tropical cyclones this weekend or early next week.
The Bureau says there is currently a moderate (25 percent) chance of cyclone development from Saturday onward, most likely in the Timor Sea, and there is a second region of possible development in the Gulf of Carpentaria as well.
These and other factors are expected to lead to increased thunderstorm activity and extensive rainfall across northern Australia this week including:
– The monsoon is likely to arrive around the Top End tomorrow and north Queensland by Friday, further amplifying showers and storms.
– An area of low pressure is developing near the western Top End later in the week, making rainfall more extensive across the Kimberley in Western Australia and the northern and western Top End.
“The combination of these factors will keep rain falling across northern Australia, with 200mm or more possible by the end of the weekend,” BOM said in a statement released today.
“The areas which are forecast to see the heaviest rainfall are the western Top End and western Cape York peninsula.”
