Tax advice for meatworkers, ag employees and truck drivers

Beef Central, 18/05/2022

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has put together a range of tax resources and tips to help people working in different occupations in agriculture when they lodge their tax returns this year.

This includes online tax guides for meat workers, agricultural workers and truck drivers which provides assistance on what can and can’t be claimed at tax time.

The ATO is also pointing out that COVID-19 tests purchased for work purposes are now tax deductible.

Employees can claim a deduction for a COVID-19 tests paid for from 1 July 2021 as longs as they:

    • used the test for a work-related purpose
    • had a qualifying COVID-19 test, such as a PCR test or a rapid antigen test
    • have a record of purchase
    • paid for the test themself and were not reimbursed for the cost by the employer.

For wage earners lodging online, the ATO says the best time to lodge is from late July.

By then, all employment information from employers, banks and health funds will be automatically included in your tax return. All you need to do is check the information and add anything that’s missing.

Finally, if you need help completing and lodging your tax return and your income is around $60,000 or less, you may be eligible for the ATO’s free Tax Help program. Support can be provided online, by phone or in person. Visit ato.gov.au/taxhelp for more information.

You can find out more information about lodging, at ato.gov.au/meatPR.
