THE largest livestock exhibition in the world is kicking off in the Texas city of Houston this week, with three weeks of competitions, conferences and brand exhibits.
More than 2 million people are expected to descend on the south of the United States for 90th anniversary of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, which hosts guests from across the world – including Beef Central’s Eric Barker.
Most of the country’s breeds will be showing at the events along with a junior steer auction, which raises money to educate young people in the industry. Last year the winner made US$400,000 with the entire sale grossing US$15 million.
As part of the event, beef industry leaders from the across the world will meet for the annual International Livestock Congress. It will hear from the US Cattleman’s Beef Association, the Texas Cattle Feeders Association and Meat & Livestock Australian managing director Jason Strong.
The conference will cover issues familiar to the Australian beef industry – global government policy for greenhouse gas emissions, climate, water demand, misinformation about the cattle industry, animal vs. plant products, supply chain disruption, regenerative agriculture strategies and traceability.
