AN enthusiastic and motivated young Irishman has contacted Beef Central looking for advice on opportunities to work a full season on a northern Australian cattle station during 2025.
Twenty-five year old Karl McGee grew up on a small beef enterprise in rural Ireland, but has more recently lived in the city to compete his tertiary education.
He currently works in an office-based role, but has recently been helping out part-time on his cousin’s Irish beef/dairy farm to further his experience with stock, horses and general farm work. He has some experience driving tractors, but does not hold a tractor or heavy vehicle licence.
Judging by our recent Zoom meeting, Karl is a bright, energetic young man with good interpersonal skills. He clearly has a passion to work with stock and to experience northern Australian station life. Depending on how things work out, he plans to stay in Australia for up to three years.
Based on our conversation, his preference is to work on a larger pastoral or family-owned extensive cattle enterprise in Western or Northern Qld, the Northern Territory or Kimberley region. He is keen to stay on for a full year, if not longer.
He has already submitted an application for a working holiday visa, and aims to arrive in Australia by February or March 2025 in time for the mustering season.
