Rebecca Kelson

FOLLOWING International Women’s Day held last weekend, this week’s recruitment article shines a light on the integral role women are playing in the red meat processing sector.

Based in Burleigh Heads on Queensland’s Gold Coast, Rebecca Kelson (pictured above) is Bindaree Food Group’s General Manager of Retail Operations.

Bindaree Food Solutions is a purpose-built, export-registered, retail-ready site, supported by the company’s processing plants at Inverell and Cooma in NSW.

As Bindaree’s primary retail-ready meat processing hub, the site features technology and innovations like sustainable flow-wrap packaging, precision vision portion-cutters and slicers, automated band saws, and other technology.

In her role, Rebecca has oversight of many moving parts within the facility and is especially proud of the responsibility and opportunities afforded to capable women at Bindaree.

As a senior leader in the business, Rebecca understands that without the active promotion and commitment to diversity and equality in the workplace, change won’t be progressive.

“With policies like Paid Parental Leave, Flexible Work Arrangements, and a commitment to Respectful Workplace, this reflects our commitment in taking action,” Rebecca said.

This year, Bindaree has launched a Diversity, Equity & Inclusion committee to drive real change across the business and become an industry leader in this space.

Traditional male dominance

“The meat industry has traditionally been male dominated – boning, slicing, slaughtering, and trade roles, leading to the underrepresentation of women,” Rebecca said.

“Limited flexibility, shift work, overtime demands, and regional locations can make it difficult for women seeking family-friendly hours.”

“Closing the wage gap and ensuring equal opportunities are priorities for Bindaree, and we’re committed to gender equality across our operations,” Rebecca said.

In the lead up to International Women’s Day this year, Bindaree ran a social media campaign highlighting that 60pc of its livestock team are women.

Rebecca encourages those in leadership positions to take action towards greater gender diversity and equality in the industry.

“Leaders need to commit to clear strategies that support gender equality, including equal pay and career pathways for women. Most importantly, businesses should listen to women in the industry -supporting, mentoring, coaching and taking action from their feedback,” she said.

Rebecca encourages any woman considering getting involved in the meat processing industry to do so.

“There are many opportunities for different career paths within the meat industry. It can be challenging, but if you have the passion and the drive to succeed then this is a great industry path to consider.”

“One of the biggest reasons I’ve been able to grow and succeed over the years is because of the incredible coaching and mentoring I’ve received. You will meet amazing leaders who will support and encourage you to be successful in any role you would like to consider within the meat industry,” Rebecca said.

The Australian Meat Processor Corporation’s More to Meat campaign is highlighting the diverse range of jobs and skills in red meat processing, as well as the industry’s contribution to the local red meat supply chain and the national economy.
