THE Australian Agricultural Co’s 2023-24 annual report issued recently provides a handy snapshot of the broader industry’s progress in gender diversity across extensive cattle production.

Over the past decade there’s been a growing trend towards greater female representation in AA Co’s staff and management ranks, this past year covering some 466 full-time equivalent employees.

To its credit, the company consistently reports gender statistics within the HR components in each year’s annual report and during the annual general meeting.

AA Co’s operations currently cover 19 owned cattle stations, four leased stations, two feedlots and two farms across Queensland and the Northern Territory.

“At AA Co we recognise the critical role women have, and continue to play in agriculture,” the company told shareholders in this year’s annual report.

“We continue to strive towards equal representation in gender throughout the organisation.”

Within AA Co’s senior leadership team comprising eight executives and their direct reports, this was achieved during the 2023-24 year, through internal promotions and internal development of staff.

There was a six percent lift in women in leadership roles in the company this past year, with the company for the first time reaching equal gender representation among its senior leadership team.

Currently, three of the eight-member executive team are females, including the company secretary & general counsel, executive general manager of people and culture, and executive general manager of corporate services.

Employee resource group pilot

Now in its second year, a new employee resource group called ‘Women of AA Co’ has piloted a mentoring program for 12 women from across the business, with senior leaders investing their time to help educate, empower and support their mentees.

In the 2023-24 pilot, 50pc of the mentors were male, and 50pc female.
