A 21-month-old Poll Hereford bull has been crowned best beef cattle exhibit at the 2012 Sydney Royal Easter Show, taking out the coveted Urquhart Trophy.
Tycolah Jovial F77, bred and exhibited by the Steve and Theresa Crowley and son Ben’s Tycolah Stud, Barraba, NSW, was senior and grand champion Poll Hereford bull and supreme breed exhibit. He then went on to defeat the grand champion bulls from all other breeds and finally, the supreme champion all breeds beef female.
For the first time Sydney Royal utilised a panel of three judges to select the interbreed winners. The group comprised Anthony Coates, Eidsvold, Qld, and brothers Ted and James Laurie, Gloucester, NSW.
A jubilant Steve Crowley said it was his biggest win in 36 years exhibiting at Sydney Royal.
He said Jovial would now go on to the 2012 Dubbo National Poll Hereford Show and Sale in June.
As a nine-month-old calf, Jovial was also judged junior and grand champion Poll Hereford bull at last year’s Sydney Royal, creating a rare championship double.
His sire, Karina Cherry Z8, continues to churn out champions, with his progeny being judged supreme Poll Hereford exhibits and sire’s progeny group winners at each of the past three Sydney Royals.
