ALEC/Livecorp tribute to Sid Parker

Beef Central, 07/01/2014

Members of the Australian Livestock Exporters’ Council and LiveCorp are mourning the passing of industry pioneer and legend Sid Parker OAM who passed away in Darwin on Monday 6 January, Chairman of ALEC Peter Kane and Chairman of LiveCorp David Galvin said today.

“A huge character, Sid has been in the livestock export trade since 1958 and is credited with the development of the live cattle trade into many parts of South East Asia”, Mr Kane said.

“The early days of the modern live export trade were tough, but his tenacity and drive led to the establishment of markets such as Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia but also entrees into Cuba,

“That same focus and energy led him on to many successes including the establishment of South East Asian Livestock Services (SEALS), which Sid has been actively involved in till his death.

“The tides of time may flow but Sid Parker will be forever considered the father of the Australian live export trade.

The Chairman of LiveCorp, David Galvin said that what Sid didn’t know about the trade, wasn’t worth knowing.

“Sid had an incredible photographic memory and he just knew the industry inside out. He left most of us in awe at his knowledge and his achievements”, Mr Galvin said.

“He was highly respected as a tough but honest businessman and equalled by his great vision for the livestock trade that will remain unsurpassed.

“And he wasn’t just focused on expanding livestock exports into new unchartered territory but also had his eye on the development of the northern cattle industry.

“He had a major part to play in introducing Brahman cattle to the Territory in the early 1960’s.

“Sid Parker was awarded a place on the industry’s much coveted Honour Roll in 2002 and recognised nationally in 2012 with an Order of Australia Medal but he will continue in death as he did in life to act as a beacon of the spirit and resolve that is at the heart of the Australian livestock export trade”.

Our deepest sympathies go to his wife Elvie and his family at this difficult time.

  • A funeral service will be held at the St Mary’s Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 90 Smith Street Darwin, on Tuesday 14th at 9.30am.
