Young cattle prices strengthen on AuctionsPlus

This line of of 96 EU-eligible PTIC Droughtmaster heifers from Dingo, central Queensland made $1040 yesterday. From the same vendors a line of 114 PTIC Droughtmaster cows, 3-8 years made $1010.

 

YOUNG cattle again dominated listings on AuctionsPlus this week, accounting for 78 percent of entries. Steer weight categories trended firm to stronger, while lighter heifer categories also rose in price.

Overall listing numbers rose slightly this week to 6070 head, with NSW dominating entries. Numbers out of Queensland are in short supply.  The dedicated Weaner & Yearling Sale achieved 78pc clearance at auction.

As has been the case in recent weeks, buyers from Queensland, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania are purchasing a large volume of stock out of NSW, totalling 52pc of turnover.

Clearance of weaner heifers from NSW jumped 9pc on last week, to reach 88pc, while clearance of yearling and grown steers in NSW also jumped 9pc, to reach 98pc.

PTIC heifers were in short supply, with one line of 96 EU-eligible 96 PTIC Droughtmaster heifers from Dingo, central Queensland making $1040. From the same vendors a line of 114 PTIC Droughtmaster cows, 3-8 years made $1010.

Cow and calf numbers dipped slightly to 517 head and achieved a clearance of 74pc this week, selling from $740 to $1520, averaging $1105.

Almost a thousand head were listed in the Weaner & Yearling Sale from the Hunter Region, NSW and achieved 100pc clearance. From Scone, 366 unweaned Angus calves were offered, aged 3-5 months. The steer portion numbering 220 head averaged 118kg and returned $405 or 343c, while the 146 heifer calves averaged 106kg and returned $320 or 302c and were purchased out of St George, Qld.

A line of 122 yearling Angus steers averaging 311kg from Belltrees, NSW averaged $955 or 307c, while from Widden, 140 Santa and Hereford cross backgrounder steers averaging 196kg made $546 or 279c.

From Corryong, VIC, composite heifers aged 11-12 months averaging 344kg made $920 or 267c.  From Mincha West, VIC, 45 Angus/Friesian steers averaging 272kg made $595 or 218c. From Mount Pleasant, SA, Angus steers 8-12 months averaging 241kg made $604 or 251c.

Among other larger lines sold this week:

  • 120 Angus feeder heifers, 10-14 months, 285kg, from Walla Walla NSW made 244c/$695
  • 104 Angus weaned heifers, 10-12 months 244kg from Bungowannah NSW made $705;  while their 76 steer siblings 233kg made $725
  • 90 Angus weaned steers, 10-11 months 306kg from Munni NSW made $1000
  • 98 Angus backgrounder steers, 11-13 months 297kg from Walcha NSW made 316c/$940
  • 103 Angus EU-eligible backgrounder heifers, 11-12 months 215kg made 263c/$565
  • 105 Angus weaned heifers, 11-12 months 228kg from Warren NSW made $545

In a breakdown of young cattle sold this week, by weight range:

  • Steers less than 250kg sold from 251c to 344c to average 296c; while heifers sold from 225-301c to average 263c
  • Steers 250-300kg sold from 219-316c to average 283c; while heifers sold from 209-278c to average 250c
  • Steers 300-350kg sold from 287-326c to average 308c; while heifers sold for 267c

It was a busy week for stud sales this week with 13 sales on AuctionsPlus. Sales included Knowla Livestock, Bannaby Angus, Birubi Limousins, Shorthorn Central, Burenda Angus, Milwillah Angus, Manchee Ag, Rennylea Angus, Furturity Shorthorns & Temana Charolais, Longyard Limousins, Choice Angus and Ironbark Herefords.
