Young cattle out of NSW dominate AuctionsPlus listings

YOUNG cattle from desperately dry regions of NSW dominated listings on AuctionsPlus this week, accounting for 89 percent of the offering in the weekly Weaner and Yearling sale catalogue totalling 4464 head.

Overall cattle numbers offered across six commercial sales on AuctionsPlus increased 4pc to 6229 head.

More than 420 unique bidders logged in throughout the six commercial sales conducted, with processors also active, focusing mainly on yearling and backgrounder steers.

PTIC and joined females this week saw just 552 head listed, with a majority of the listings coming out of NSW. Prices ranged from $895 to $1630 and averaged $1119, down $267 on last week. The top price came for a small line of 3-4 year old Speckle Park x Santa cows with calves at foot,  and joined back to Speckle Park bulls, from Hillston, NSW.

Station mated Angus cows 6-10 years with calves at foot and joined back to Angus bulls, from Dalton, NSW made $1100, and will head 700km to Pirron Yallock, VIC.

Second Water Pastoral Co, Barraba, NSW offered 51 PTIC Angus/Angus cross cows 4-9 years, in calf to Wagyu bulls, which sold for $900.

Cow and calf numbers remained steady again this week with 513 head listed. Prices ranged from $850 to $1510, to average $1158, an increase of $97 on last week. Top price was achieved by a line of 26-28 month old cows with Yarram Park blood calves at foot, from Holbrook, NSW. A small line of Speckle Park/Angus first-calvers with Tivoli Angus blood CAF made $1150, offered by Shannon Partnership, Merriwa, NSW.

From Goondiwindi, QLD, WP Organic Pastoral Co offered two lines of Certified Organic heifers; 72 Angus and Angus cross averaging 211kg to return 211c/kg or $445, along with 16 Charolais cross heifers averaging 192kg to return 188c or $360.

From Bourke, NSW, 38 yearling Santa heifers averaging 232kg returned 181c or $420, while a line of 90 Angus heifers aged 11 months averaging 201kg from Guyra, NSW made 228c or $460.

Tivoli Angus, Merriwa NSW offered 90 Angus future breeders over three lots, averaging 324kg, which returned 293c or $950, with all 90 head purchased out of Western Victoria.

JLSM Farming Trust, Tamworth, NSW offered 38 yearling Angus steers averaging 291kg to return 305c or $890, while from Binnaway, NSW, a line of 122 weaned Angus steers averaging 253kg returned 308c or $780.

Diamond Jay Management, Singleton, NSW, offered 44 Angus and Angus X vealer steers, aged 5-6 months, EU accredited and averaging 178kg, to return 225c or $400, while from Holbrook, NSW, 68 Poll Hereford steers 11-12 months averaging 292kg returned 300c or $875.

Out of Tasmania this week, two small lines of Angus weaned steers and heifers were offered by Lawrence Lee Family Trust from Scottsdale. The heifers 10-12 months averaging 365kg, sold for 361c/kg or $1010. Their steer siblings averaging 403kg returned 330c/kg or $1220.

In a breakdown of young cattle sold this week, by weight range:

  • Steers less than 250kg sold from 222c to 324c to average 266c; while heifers sold from 181-255c to average 211c
  • Steers 250-300kg sold from 259-309c to average 294c; while heifers sold from 163-263c to average 229c
  • Steers 300-350kg sold from 220-304c to average 275c; while heifers sold from 286-295c to average 292c
  • Steers 350+kg sold for 302c; while heifers sold for 276c

Angus steers 11 to 12 months, 253kg, from BINNAWAY, NSW sold for 309c/$780

Santa Gertrudis steers 8 to 20 months, 244kg, from BLACKALL, QLD sold for 246c/$600

Shorthorn steers 8 to 10 months, 210kg, from GOONDIWINDI, QLD sold for 236c/$495

Angus steers 10 to 12 months, 403kg, from SCOTTSDALE, TAS sold for 303c/$1220

Angus steers 7 to 10 months, 239kg, from TARA, TAS sold for 272c/$650.

Angus heifers 11-13 months, 324kg, from MERRIWA, NSW sold for 294c/$950

Angus/Poll Hereford heifers 11 to 12.5 months, 289kg, from GEROGERY, NSW sold for 263c/$760
