Yearling steers average 318c in big 12,914 head AuctionsPlus offering

This line of 83 Angus feeder steers 12-14 months 346kg from Yammatree Family Trust, Cootamundra, NSW made 327.3c or $1134 this week.

 

NUMBERS climbed sharply for the third consecutive week on AuctionsPlus this week, reaching 12,914 head, up almost 3000 head or 30pc on the previous week. Larger numbers saw a dip in clearance rate, to 44pc across all commercial cattle sales.

Online buying trends followed the EYCI’s recent performance, seeing the first week of downturn in a month. Producers are now looking at a cold and dry winter after less than anticipated autumn rainfalls and early frosts in key growing regions affecting buyer interest.

Angus cattle marketed well again this week, achieving top prices in most stock categories.

Cow & calf listings were down this week to total 428 head, selling from $1380 to $1700 and averaging $1498, up $76 on last week. The top price was achieved by a line of 20 Hazeldean blood Angus cows plus calves from Adaminaby, NSW. Averaging 536kg, the 3-5 year old cows and their March/April drop calves will travel to Holbrook, NSW.

Joined cow listings totalled 1913 head this week and sold from $625 to $1410 to average $989, down $23 on last week. Top price was achieved by a line of 39 Angus PTIC 3-4 year old cows from Goulburn, NSW, averaging 521kg, which were sold to Wagga Wagga, NSW.

Joined heifer offerings totalled 802 head this week and sold from $900 to $1260, averaging $1047, up $18 on last week. Top price was achieved by 45 Angus heifers from Wagga Wagga, NSW, 20-32 months averaging 407kg, PTIC to Wagyu bulls, which will stay in the Wagga area.

Weaner steer offerings totalled 4496 head this week, and sold from 203-334c, averaging 301c. Top price was achieved by a line of 36 Booroomooka & Trio blood Angus steers offered by the Parry Trust, Willow Tree, NSW. Averaging 306kg, these steers were 8-9 months old and will travel to Bandon Grove, NSW.

Weaner heifer offerings totalled 2552 head this week and sold from 200-270c to average 247c. Top price was achieved by 18 Limousin x Angus heifers offered by Poltalloch Plains Pastoral, Ashville, SA. These heifers averaged 363kg and were 15-17 months old, and will travel to Burra, SA.

Yearling steer offerings totalled 1216 head and sold from 298-340c to average 318c. Top price was achieved by a line of 200 Angus feeder steers offered Glen Collin Pastoral Co, Walcha, NSW, 17-20 months averaging 428kg and headed for Quirindi, NSW.

A line of 38 Hereford future breeders from Kings Plains, NSW returned 215c or $580 a head. Averaging 293kg, the heifers were 17-20 months, and will travel to Narrabri, NSW. Another line of 68 Angus feeder heifers averaging 316kg aged 11-14 months offered by Yammatree Family Trust, Cootamundra, NSW, sold at 270c/$853. The heifers will travel to Anakie, VIC.

Yammatree Family Trust had an offering of 812 head of Angus steers and heifers in the Weaner & Yearling Friday sale achieving an 84pc clearance and prices reaching 327c and an average of 300c. Similarly, Mooramook Grazing, listed 751 head of weaned Angus steers in the same sale and achieved 100pc clearance, selling from 295-322c averaging 315c.

Feeder cattle listings are growing each week, with 746 head listed in yesterday’s sale, selling from 231-340c to average 304c.

Highlight results included Angus feeder steers from Walcha that sold for 340c; crossbred feeders from Goondiwindi selling for 285c; Angus feeder steers from Black Springs making 282c; Angus feeder steers from Cootamundra making 326c; Cootamundra Angus feeder heifers making 270c; and Angus feeder steers from Adjungbilly making 313c.

In a breakdown of young cattle sold this week, by weightrange:

  • Steers less than 250kg sold from 250-329c to average 300c; while heifers sold from 212-264c to average 247c
  • Steers 250-300kg sold from 203-328c to average 303c; while heifers sold from 200-270c to average 243c
  • Steers 300-350kg sold from 279-333c to average 317c; while heifers sold from 233-270c to average 251c
  • Steers 350+ kg sold for 340c; while heifers sold from 232-262c to average 249c
