Yarding 3300 Change +250
This week at Wagga saw a slight increase in the number to 3300.
Most were well-bred secondary stock, with minimal crossbreds or coloured cattle. Notably, the sale lacked heavier weights once again. Regular buyers attended and were most active in purchasing secondary categories. However, export processors showed less enthusiasm compared to the previous market.
Well-finished cows were well supplied, but competition was inconsistent, leading to a price drop of 12c/kg. Heavy cows were sold between 302c and 339c/kg, while leaner types fetched between 260c and 308c slipping 18c/kg. Heavy steers and bullocks were limited in supply, and prices fell by 12c to 20c, ranging from 330c to 382c/kg. Heavy heifers with good shape attracted fewer buyers this week, selling between 295c and 360c/kg.
The scarcity of heavy feeder steers resulted in prices between 350c and 402c/kg. With fewer heavyweight options, buyers shifted their attention to steers under 500kg. Medium-weight feeder steers remained unchanged, with slight price gains in places for the very best steers. Prices for medium weight steers ranged from 330c and 415c/kg. Lighter weight feeder steers, weighing from 330 to 400kg, saw a significant price increase of 30c, selling from 330c to 411c/kg. Medium-weight feeder heifers gained 12c, trading between 306c and 374c/kg. The market for lightweight weaner steers was very strong with prices building as the market progressed. Price gains of 30c to 50c were common. The better bred light weight steers sold from 350c to 422c/kg. Trade heifers weighing 400 to 500kg saw a slight price increase, ranging from 295c to 396c/kg. Limited trade steers sold between 360c and 400c/kg.
Overall, the yarding was marked by a limited supply of heavier cattle and subdued export processor activity. Despite the reduced enthusiasm from export buyers, the regular buyers maintained their presence and activity, particularly in secondary categories. The price fluctuations reflected the supply constraints and shifting buyer focus, particularly towards medium and lighter weight cattle.
