In Wagga, the recent cattle market showcased the prominence of feedlots, asserting their dominance in a larger yarding.
The influx of nearly 2000 extra cattle triggered significant shifts in cattle prices, with a particular spotlight on Bullocks. Those sourced from river flats or benefiting from grain assistance experienced a noteworthy 50c surge, commanding prices ranging from 258c to 314c/kg. This contributed to an overarching market surge of 15c to 35c/kg.
The focus on heavy steers destined for processors remained steadfast, emerging as a sought-after commodity with a substantial 35c improvement, averaging at 291c/kg. Specifically, heavy feeder steers in the 500 to 600kg range gained 30c, settling at an average of 300c/kg. The market also witnessed a significant uptick for heavy heifers, surging o30c and reaching a top of 306c/kg.
Feeder steers, spanning all weight categories, recorded gains of 20c to 25c, with lighter weights in the 330 to 400kg range commanding prices ranging from 300c to an impressive 370c/kg. While trade steers were relatively scarce, they secured solid sales, fetching prices between 320c and 335c/kg. Trade heifers followed suit, recording a 7c increase and trading within the range of 266c to 310c/kg.
Feed heifers emerged as particularly sought after, experiencing a notable jump of 23c in their prices, especially for medium weights selling from 255c to 301c/kg. The cow market demonstrated robust demand, with prices climbing as the market progressed. Lighter weight cows engaged in prolonged bidding duels, lifting 30c to reach an impressive top price of 270c/kg. Heavy cows saw a 20c increase and commanded prices ranging from 240c to 276c/kg, underscoring the overall resilience of the cow market.
