Steers and young heifer prices trend higher in online trading

These 94 EU-eligible Angus heifers 12-13 months averaging 328kg from Mandurama, NSW, returned $1820 or 555c/kg and will travel to a buyer near Walcha, NSW. A further 55 lighter heifers 293kg at the same age made 416c/kg or $1220.

Most steer and young heifer categories showed c/kg price rises on AuctionsPlus online trading last week, where cattle numbers lifted 41 percent on the prior week to 14,075 head. Clearance rates also trended higher on young cattle.

Processor/lotfeeder activity picked up again last week to 10.91pc, with 1246 head purchased.

Queensland was the largest listing state last week, offering 7002 head, more than 2000 above the previous week. The offering received some strong competition from both local and interstate buyers, with most of the offering selling between Queensland and NSW.

Solid c/kg price gains were seen for steers 200-280kg, where the 2030 head offered cleared 92pc, lifting 25c/kg in average price to 433c. Steers 330-400kg lifted 10c to average 420c/kg, clearing 87pc of an offering of 1540 head.

Heavy feeder steers +400kg also showed sharp improvement, lifting 33c to average 411c/kg, clearing 870pc of a small offering.

From West Kentish, Tasmania, Sim-Angus steers 16-17 months averaging 464kg returned $1910/head or 412c/kg and will travel to a buyer near Penguin, Tasmania.

From Mandurama, NSW, 94 EU-eligible Angus heifers 12-13 months averaging 328kg returned $1820 or 555c/kg and will travel to a buyer near Walcha, NSW. A further 55 lighter heifers 293kg at the same age made 416c/kg or $1220.

From Baddaginnie, Victoria, 21 Angus heifers 22-24 months averaging 475kg returned $1650 or 348c/kg and will travel to a buyer near Tarnook, Victoria.

Lighter heifers also showed some gains, with descriptions 280-330kg lifting 13c to average 371c, clearing 95pc of an offering of 1740 head, while 280-330kg heifers lost 5c to average 346c, clearing 86pc of an offering of 1880 head.

Breeder cattle numbers were somewhat limited this week, with an offering of 566 PTIC cows clearing only 20pc, producing a $168/head lift in average price to $2065.
