Elders and Nutrien’s online platform AuctionsPlus saw a decline in commercial cattle listings last week, down 16pc to 10,417 head offered. The smaller offering was met with mixed competition as clearance fell to 69pc, but values in completed transactions for all but one steer and heifer weight categories was up.
Steers 200-280kg registered a smaller offering of 1027 head listed, with strong competition, achieving a 95pc clearance and average prices 63c higher than the previous week, averaging 447c/kg. Prices ranged from 292-530c/kg.
A strong offering of 1439 feeder weight steers +400kg saw prices lift 8c/kg to average 362c, for a clearance of 66pc.
Among the heifer offering, heifers 200-280kg also registered a smaller yarding of 724 head, averaging 30c higher at 313c. Clearance remained high at 91pc, with prices ranging from 253-359c/kg.
A yarding of 928 heifers 330-400kg cleared 66pc to average 332c/kg, up 12c on last week. From Barrington, TAS a line of 11 Shorthorn heifers 12-13 months old averaging 288kg returned $910/head, or 316c/kg and will travel to a buyer in Railton, TAS.
Larger lines
Among larger lines sold on Friday, 120 backgrounder steers, mostly Euro types carrying Simmental x Charbray breeding, 8-12 months averaging 225kg from Oakey in southern Queensland made 475c/kg or $1070 and will travel to a buyer near Taroom, QLD.
Out of Warren in Central Western NSW, 422 Angus feeder steers sold in five lots averaging from 347kg to 406kg, made from 355c/kg or $1441 (heavier end) to 391c/kg $1355 at the lighter end. The one-brand Te Mania blood steers were bred on the Henwood family’s Aldingham station near Winton in western Queensland before trucking to their Warren NSW property Bora in May this year.

Breeding females
Within breeding cattle listings, Friday’s price trend was in start contrast with the lighter steers and heifers. All but one category was sharply down – in some cases on large double-digits in c/kg terms.
An offering of 471 PTIC heifers fell an average of 43c/kg or $95, to average $1632, while PTIC cows (343 offered) fell $163 to average $1425. NSM heifers ands calves and cows and calves both fell in value – in the case of the heifers down $164/pair in value on the previous week, to $2215.
An offering of 41 Angus cows 4-6 years averaging 510kg from Glen Innes, northern NSW returned $2310/head and will travel to a buyer near Balfours Peak, NSW.
