Sharp rise in young heifer prices in smaller AuctionsPlus offering

NUMBERS decreased marginally to 7611 head on AuctionsPlus last week, where young heifer prices spiked sharply in response to strong buyer demand.

Bidding interest remained strong, with 496 individual buyers logging-on to Friday’s sales.

Young heifer numbers made up 38pc of this week’s catalogue with cow and calf listings making up a further 28pc of listings.

Stand-out steer prices included a line of 48 7-8 month old recently weaned Angus steers from Eurella, Rylstone, NSW averaging 218kg, which sold for 503c/kg or $1095. A deck of 44 weaned heifers similar age from the same herd, averaging 230kg, made $970.

A large line of Angus/ Santa and Santa steers from Bundarra, NSW sold for 444c/kg or $1195. These unweaned steers were aged 7-10 months, with an average weight of 269kg.

Heading south to Tumbarumba, NSW a line of Rennylea and Onslow blood Angus steers, 13-15 months with an average weight of 350kg, sold for 383c/kg or $1340.

Heifer price highlights included a line of Friesian and Jersey/Friesian heifers from Tallangatta, VIC, aged 3-4 months with an average weight of 106kg, which sold for 566c/kg or $600.

A large line of 102 Angus and Angus cross backgrounder heifers 12-14 months with an average weight of 282kg from Goondiwindi, QLD sold for 399c/kg or $1125. Also in the north, a line of Talbalba blood Hereford heifers, 11-14 months old with an average weight of 388kg, sold for 361c/kg or $1400.

In a breakdown of young cattle sold, by weight range:

  • Steers under 250kg sold from 376/kg to 503c/kg to average 420c/kg, up 40c; while heifers less than 250kg sold from 390-566c, with an average of 445c, jumping 70c
  • Steers 250-300kg sold from 393c-444c, averaging 410c, up 4c; heifers sold from 261-399c to average 356c, easing 5c
  • Steers 300-350kg sold from 331-370c, averaging 350c, easing 25c; heifers sold from 315-387c, averaging 346c, staying steady
  • Steers 350kg+ sold from 319c-483c, with an average of 354c, easing 14c; heifers sold from 319-460c, with an average of 350c, up 12c

Breeding cattle highlights

Among breeding cattle highlights, joined females averaged $1684, with the top price of $2020 going to a line of Santa cross and Angus cross heifers. These heifers, aged from 14 to 30 months, are PTIC to Westholme Wagyu bulls.

Two lines of proven breeders from Booligal, NSW both sold for $1900. The first lot was a line of Angus cows, aged 6-7 years, PTIC to Charolais bulls. The second was a line of Charolais/Angus cows, 4-6 years, PTIC to Angus bulls.

Cow and calf prices remained strong this week with first-calvers averaging $2450. The top price for cows and calves of $3200 was paid for a line of two-year old, EU accredited first-calf Angus heifers from Camperdown, VIC.  They had Angus calves at foot weighing an average of 110kg and have been re-joined back to Angus bulls.

Young breeders averaged $2490 with a top price of $3190. This top price went to a line of 2-4 year old, Angus cows from Wandoan, QLD. These cows have Wagyu calves at foot weighing an average of 100kg and have been re-joined back to Wagyu bulls.

Proven breeders averaged $2185 with a top price of $3190. This top price went to a line of 5-8 year old Angus cows from Wandoan, QLD. These cows have Wagyu calves at foot weighing an average of 118kg and have been re-joined back to Wagyu bulls.

Honourable mentions for cows and calves go to a line of British White cross cows, from Benalla, VIC which sold for $2610. These cows aged from 3-6 years, with British White calves at foot weighing an average of 225kg.

From the north, a line of 77 8-14 year old Red and Grey Brahman cows from Julia Creek sold for $1455. These cows had Hacon blood Brahman calves at foot weighing an average of 163kg.

A line of 34 registered Fullblood Wagyu heifers from Robel Pastoral, Mitchell, QLD sold from $2500 to a top price of $4550.
