Sharp rise in young cattle values on AuctionsPlus after rain

ALL young cattle categories increased sharply in value on AuctionsPlus this week – in some weight categories by as much as 50c/kg.

Clearance rates continued to rise, with many areas continuing to receive some good falls of rain.

Listing numbers dropped by 442 to total 6336 head across all sales for the week, with  clearance rates improving again to 75 percent. Just under 4000 head of this week’s listing comprised of yearling steers and heifers.

Cow and calf units remained popular, achieving an 89% clearance across the 901 head listed and selling for an average price of $1,494. The top price of $2,380/hd was achieved by an outstanding line of 44 Angus cows & calves, offered by ‘The Yanko’ Jerilderie, NSW. Weighing 626kgs, these cows are EU accredited, 5 years old and joined to Angus bulls. The calves at foot are sired by Merridale Angus bulls, weigh 241kgs and are 4-6 months old. The vendor also offered another line of 53 Angus cows & calves which returned another standout result of $2,260/hd.

From Mudgee, NSW a line of 56 Angus heifers with first calves returned $1,850. These heifers are bred from Tucklan Valley blood, are 25-26 months old and weigh 365kgs. The 56 calves are sired by Trio bulls, 1-3 months and weigh 92kgs. While from Coolac, NSW a line of Charolais/Angus cross cows & calves sold for $1,640. Weighing 496kgs, these cows are 3.5 years old, with 2-3 month old CAF. Another highlight saw a small line of 9 Speckle Park/Shorthorn cows and calves from Tallarook, VIC secured by a SA buyer for $1,310.

PTIC cows were in shorter supply this week, with a single line of Angus cows from Redpa, TAS returning $1,300. These cows are 3 years old, weigh 486kgs, bred from Landfall Angus blood and are in calf to Angus bulls. Another highlight from Tasmania saw a line of 15 Angus steers return $1,140. From Bishopsbourne, these steers are 12-13 months and weigh 325kgs.

Yearling heifers returned an average price of 280c, selling to a top of 316c. From Guyra, NSW a line of 13 Angus heifers achieved the top price. These heifers are 13-15 months and weigh 200kgs. The vendor also offered a line of 13-15 month Angus steers weighing 194kgs which returned 387c, the top price for yearling steers this week. From Canowindra, NSW a line of Angus heifers sold for 295c. Weighing 350kgs, these heifers are 13-14 months and bred from Millah Murrah blood. While from Tennant Creek, NT a line of 160 Droughtmaster weaned heifers sold for $460. These heifers weigh 208kgs, are 10-12 months and will travel almost 2000km to Rolleston, QLD.

Yearling steers returned an average price of 331c, selling to a top of 387c.  From Coolah, NSW a line of Angus cross steers returned 379c. Weighing 210kgs, these steers are 12-13 months and are bred from Rennylea Angus blood. From Walcha, a line Angus backgrounder steers sold for 339c. These steers are 13-14 months, weigh 390kgs and are bred from Kilburnie blood. While from Pemberton, WA a line of 75 Angus cross mixed sex yearlings returned 515c/kg dressed. These yearlings are grass-fed, 15-17 months old and weigh 509kgs.
