Roma store sale 7 May: Heifers dearer in 4558 head yarding

DEMAND remained strong for better lines of cattle but tapered off quickly for steers, however heifers saw price increases across most weight brackets at Roma store sale yesterday.

Numbers rose by 295 to 4558 head, drawn mostly from the local supply area. A smaller panel of buyers was present and operating selectively. The yarding was again dominated by young cattle and the overall quality was good.

The largest sample of lightweight yearling steers under 280kg to restockers fell by 6c/kg. A small number of mediumweight yearling steers under 330kg to feed rose by 3c/kg. Mediumweight yearling steers under 400kg to feed fell by 8c to 26c/kg. Lightweight yearling heifers under 280kg rose by 15-19c/kg. Mediumweight yearling heifers under 330kg rose by 4c-26c/kg. Mediumweight 2 score cows rose by 8c, while mediumweight 3 score cows rose by 7c/kg. Heavyweight 3 score cows fell by 2c/kg.

Calves sold to 310.2c to average 273c/kg. The largest sample of lightweight yearling steers under 280kg to restockers sold to 328.2c to average 305c/kg. A small number of mediumweight yearling steers under 330kg to feed made to 314.2c to average 310c/kg. Medium weight yearling steers under 400kg to feed made to 293.2c to average 290c/kg. A good number of lightweight yearling heifers under 280kg to restockers made to 268.2c to average 248c/kg. Mediumweight yearling heifers under 330kg sold to 258.2c to average 241c/kg. Mediumweight yearling heifers under 400kg to feed sold to 262.2c to average 245c/kg.

The best of the grown heifers made to 245.2c to average 228c/kg. Mediumweight 2 score cows sold to 197.2c to average 170c while the medium weight 3 score cows sold to 214.2c to average 206c/kg. Heavyweight 3 score cows sold to 215.2c to average 209c while heavyweight 4 score cows made to 221.2c to average 216c/kg.

Tom Golden of Potters Flat, Yuleba and TopX agent Cyril Close with the Charolais cross heifers that sold to 256c/kg, reaching a top of $702 to average $578.

Golden Grazing Pty Ltd, Potters Flat, Yuleba sold Charolais cross steers to 323c/kg, reaching a top of $914 to average $757. The Charolais cross heifers sold to 256c/kg, reaching a top of $702 to average $578.

DC Diamond Past, Mirri Mirri, Hannaford sold Charolais steers to 320c/kg, reaching a top of $862 to average $628. The Santa cross heifers sold to 262c/kg, reaching a top of $578 to average $553.

Berina Pty Ltd, T/AS KG & MI Giltrow, Barina, Moonie sold Angus cross steers to 314c/kg, reaching a top of $961 to average $920.

AJ & SJ Smith, Openbah, St George sold Simmental cross steers to 312c/kg, reaching a top of $708 to average $654. The Simmental cross heifers sold to 220c/kg, reaching a top of $498 to average $498.

MG & LJ Huntly, Kilburnie, Muckadilla sold Charolais steers to 308c/kg, reaching a top of $656 to average $653. The Santa cross heifers sold to 262c/kg, reaching a top of $587 to average $543.
