Roma sale 6 May 2025: Prices ease in smaller yarding

QUALITY weaner steers were the main feature of Tuesday’s sale with just under 6,400 head yarded at the Roma Saleyards.

All regular processors, feedlotters, and backgrounders, were in attendance and actively bidding on a quality yarding that featured several quality local lines of weaners.

Market prices softened in several categories compared to the previous sale.

The yarding featured cattle consigned primarily from the local supply district, including Roma, Morven, Charleville and Mitchell.

Cattle were also drawn from as far as Muttaburra, Cloncurry, Blackall in northern Queensland and Cobar, NSW in the south.

Jack and Emma Groat offloaded a large line of 380 weaner steers fetching an average 415c/kg to weigh 266kg fetching $1,103/hd.

Operating out of both ‘Lorraine’ and ‘Gracemere’, the Maranoa based producers made 430c/kg for two straight pens of their Droughtmaster cross steers weighing at 265kg for a return of $1,140/hd.

A further two pens of South Devon cross steers made a straight 430c/kg to weigh 270kg returning an average $1,164/hd.

A heavier pen of Droughtmaster cross steers sold for 400c/kg weighing 345kg to return $1,381/hd.

S J Packer of ‘Hartwood’ Roma offloaded a large line of 173 Angus cross, Charolais cross, and Santa Gertrudis cross steers to average 435c/kg to weigh 319kg for an average return of $1,378/hd.

A pen of Charolais cross steers sold under the hammer for 450c/kg to weigh 329kg for a return of $1,480kg.

A further pen of Angus cross steers made 456c/kg weighing in at 282kg fetching $1,288/hd.

Andromeda Cattle Co offloaded a line of 169 Angus cross and Droughtmaster cross steers to average $396c/kg weighing 387kg for a return of $1,534/hd.

From out at Mungallala, two pens of Droughtmaster cross steers made 404c/kg to weigh 386kg for an average return of $1559/hd.

A further four pens of Angus cross and Charolais cross steers fetched a straight 394c/kg to weigh 388kg fetching $1,530/hd.

The line was consigned through Nutrien Roma.

 

NLRS Commentary:

With reduced numbers Roma Agents yarded 6,363 head. All the regular processors feedlotters and backgrounders present. A very good quality yarding of new season weaners penned as well as bullocks. The market could not sustain the levels of the last sale for all categories. There were 2 extra export buyers in attendance and active.

Yearling steers 200 to 280kg topped 464c/kg. Yearling steers 280 to 330kg with the majority selling from 330c to 464c to average 424c/kg to restockers. Yearling steers 330 to 400kg made from 310c to 436c/kg. Yearling steers 400 to 480kg topping 402c to average 386c/kg. Yearling steers over 480kg made to 353c/kg.

Yearling heifers under 200kg topped 344c/kg. Yearling heifers 200 to 280kg with the majority selling from 220c to a top of 378c/kg 12c/kg dearer. Yearling heifers 280 to 330kg sold from 272c to 358c/kg. Yearling heifers 330 to 400kg made to 367c/to feed and 350c/kg to restockers. Yearling heifers 400 to 480kg sold to dearer trend and made to 367c/kg to feed.

Grown steers 500 to 600kg selling from 306c to 339c/kg. Bullocks over 600kg to 345c to processors. Grown heifers over 540kg made to 340c to average 307c to be almost 20c/kg cheaper. Prime score 2 and 3 cows sold between 200c to a top of 290c/kg. Heavy bulls 322c/kg to processors.

A total of 6,366 head of cattle were consigned at Roma’s Store Sale on Tuesday.

Weaner steers under 200kg topped at 440c/kg and averaged 393c/kg, weaner steers in the 200-280kg range reached 464c/kg and averaged 412c/kg. Steers in the 280-330kg range reached 456c/kg and averaged 417c/kg, and steers in the 330-400kg range reached 436c/kg and averaged 393c/kg. Feeder steers in the 400-500kg range topped at 402c/kg and averaged 354c/kg.

LJ & LG Crosby, Ashton Grove, Surat sold Charolais cross steers to 464c/kg, reaching a top of $1,279 to average $1,125.  The Charolais cross heifers sold to 378c/kg, reaching a top of $1,029 to average $877.

SJ Packer, Hartwood, Roma sold Angus cross steers to 456c/kg, reaching a top of $2,164 to average $1,384.

JM Bell, Kinnoul, Taroom sold Santa Gertrudis cross steers to 456c/kg, reaching a top of $1,252 to average $1,131.

DG, JC & BG Gray Partnership, Abrach, Muttaburra sold Santa Gertrudis cross steers to 454c/kg, reaching a top of $1,719 to average $1,458.

Defiance Cattle Co, Mountain Cottage, Roma sold Angus cross steers to 448c/kg, reaching a top of $1,416 to average $1,202.

Mike & Carla Carroll, Wallumbilla sold Angus cross steers to 442c/kg, reaching a top of $1,115 to average $1,115.  The Angus cross heifers sold to 364c/kg, reaching a top of $895 to average $895.

Fennell Pastoral, Lambina Station, Marla sold Charolais steers to 442c/kg, reaching a top of $1,492 to average $1,174.  The Charolais heifers sold to 360c/kg, reaching a top of $907 to average $815.

Parklane Grazing, Parklane, Drillham sold Charolais cross steers to 436c/kg, reaching a top of $1,464 to average $1,269.

Heifers in the 280-330kg range topped at 364c/kg, averaging 323c/kg. Heifers in the 330-400kg range topped at 364c/kg, averaging 314c/kg. Heifers in the 400-500kg range topped at 370c/kg, averaging 327c/kg.

K & A Peart, Coolibah Station, Mitchell sold Simmental cross heifers to 367c/kg, reaching a top of $1,666 to average $1,564.

Borehead Pastoral Co, Malakoff, Cloncurry sold Charolais cross heifers to 364c/kg, reaching a top of $1,248 to average $940.

DG & GH East, Jireh Park, Roma sold Charolais heifers to 364c/kg, reaching a top of $1,650 to average $1,346.

GS & C White, Marionvale, Surat sold Droughtmaster cross heifers to $1,550, to average $1,500.

 

Cows in the 330-400kg range reached 200c/kg and averaged 145c/kg. Cows in the 400-500kg range topped at 284c/kg, averaging 236c/kg. Cows in the 500-600kg range topped at 285c/kg, averaging 261c/kg. Cows over 600kg topped at 290c/kg, averaging 270c/kg.
