Roma sale 17 Jan 2023: Competition lifts for light steers and heifers

Numbers lifted to 3812 head of cattle at Roma this week. Most of the yarding was sourced from local surrounding areas and overall quality was good. All the major export processors were present and operating with prime cattle holding firm on last week, and despite the seasonal conditions, the was an increase in competition for light weight steers and heifers. Medium weight steers and heifers were pushed along by restockers. Light weight restocker steers under 280kg lifted 23c selling to 580.2c to average 529c while restocker steers 280 to 330kg held firm selling to 534.2c to average 474c/kg. Medium weight steers 330 to 400kg saw large gains of up to 99c due to an increase in competition from restockers selling to an isolated 538.2 with most averaging 481c, while feeders averaged 443c/kg. Heavy feeder steers also saw gains of 33c to top at 450.2c to average 406c and heavy prime steers held firm topping at 366.2c/kg. Good quality light weight restocker heifers saw price improvements of 17c to top at 488.2c to average 425c/kg. Restockers paid up to 430c for medium weight heifers returning to the paddock averaging 398c while feeder heifers lost 10-15c mainly due to a reduction in quality from last week, making to 396c to average 379c/kg. PTIC cows to the restockers topped at 310c, medium weight cows sold to 293c to average 287c while good heavy cows over 520kg made to 303c averaging 299c. Cows and Calves sold to $3020/unit.

Weaner steers 200-280kg range reached 580c/kg and averaged 535c/kg. Steers in the 280-330kg range reached 534c/kg and averaged 479c/kg, and steers in the 330-400kg range reached 538c/kg and averaged 455c/kg. Feeder steers in the 400-500kg range topping at 450c/kg and averaging 407c/kg.

KC Chandler, Glentulloch, Injune sold Angus cross steers to 570c/kg, reaching a top of $1,427 to average $1,409. The Angus cross heifers sold to 488c/kg, reaching a top of $1,158 to average $1,158.

Mark & Jeannie Bowtell, Barbeth, Dulacca sold Droughtmaster steers to 570c/kg, reaching a top of $1,338 to average $1,281. The Droughtmaster heifers sold to 386c/kg, reaching a top of $885 to average $773.

Kobe Pastoral, Aqualoo, St. George sold Hereford cross steers to 554c/kg, reaching a top of $1,473 to average $1,406.

C.F. & J.V. Creagh, Varna, Charleville sold Brangus steers to 554c/kg, reaching a top of $1,413 to average $1,340.

Larry Bidgood, Wurawa, Condamine sold Angus steers to 538c/kg, reaching a top of $1,783 to average $1,783. The Angus heifers sold to 400c/kg, reaching a top of $1,183 to average $1,174.

Heifers under 200kg topped at 460c/kg and averaged 354c/kg, while heifers in the 200-280kg range topped at 488c/kg and averaged 411c/kg. Heifers in the 280-330kg range topped at 460c/kg, averaging 393c/kg. Heifers in the 330-400kg range topped at 430c/kg, averaging 378c/kg. Heifers in the 400-500kg range topped at 426c/kg, averaging 353c/kg.

Rosehearty Grazing Co, Koonong Downs sold Santa Gertrudis heifers to 450c/kg, reaching a top of $1,360 to average $1,288.

Torres Park Grazing Co, Torres Park, Augathella sold Santa Gertrudis heifers to 430c/kg, reaching a top of $1,464 to average $1,303. The Santa Gertrudis cows sold to 300c/kg, reaching a top of $2,066 to average $1,770.

Palm Lea Cattle Company, Pine Grove, Taroom sold Santa Gertrudis cross heifers to 400c/kg, reaching a top of $1,568 to average $1,385.

GN Blacket, Tamanick, Mitchell sold Droughtmaster cross heifers to 338c/kg, reaching a top of $1,650 to average $1,453. The Droughtmaster cross cows sold to 269c/kg, reaching a top of $1,830 to average $1,675.
