Roma Saleyards market report – Tuesday, 5 November

Vendors John and Sandy Mulchay, Pringle Downs, Roma offloaded a total head of 150 Angus cross and Santa Gertrudis cross steers to average 347c/kg at 509kg and returned an average of $1766 per head. The line was consigned through Elders Roma.

The market remained firm with dearer trends reflected dependent on condition and quality.

Upwards of five cents were recorded across some categories.

The regular processors, backgrounders and feed-lotters were in attendance and active in their bids.

Local and afar cattle made up the yarding with lines sourced from western regions such as Quilpie, Boulia, Muttaburra, Cunnamulla, Winton, Augathella, Barcaldine and Longreach.

Cattle were also yarded from as far afield as Cloncurry in the north, Broken Hill in New South Wales and Coober Pedy in South Australia.

The yarding featured several lines of quality finished bullocks and heavy steers.

Vendors John and Sandy Mulchay, Pringle Downs, Roma offloaded a total head of 150 Angus cross and Santa Gertrudis cross steers to average 347c/kg at 509kg and returned an average of $1766 per head.

The commercial producers operate a predominately fattening enterprise across their Maranoa block alongside their horse breeding operation.

Mr Mulchay said they primarily targeted the trade steer market and bought and fattened dependent on seasonal conditions.

A pen of their 13 Angus cross steers fetched 348c/kg to weigh 622kg and returned $2167/hd.

The pen saw an increase of four cents on last week’s maximum of 344c/kg in the over 600-kilogram weight range category.

A further pen of their 21 Angus cross steers sold for 350c/kg weighing 492kg to return $1724/hd.

A pen of their 11 Santa Gertrudis cross steers fetched 346c/kg to weigh 495kg and returned $1653/hd.

The line was consigned through Elders Roma.

The Thompson family, Thompson Business Trust, Toora, Dalby sold 114 Santa Gertrudis cross steers to average 392c/kg at 328kg and returned $1288/hd. The line was consigned through GDL Blackall.

Three pens of their steers sold for a straight 404c/kg.

The pens saw an increase of six cents on last week’s maximum of 398c/kg in the 280-to-330-kilogram weight range category.

A pen of their 27 Santa Gertrudis cross steers fetched 404c/kg to weigh 317kg and returned $1283/hd.

A further pen of their 14 Santa Gertrudis cross steers sold for 376c/kg to weigh 365kg and returned $1373/hd.

The line was consigned through GDL Blackall.

In the female selection, vendors Andy and Madonna Douglas, Springfield, Mitchell sold 35 Droughtmaster cross heifers to average 293c/kg at 370kg and returned an average of $1082/hd. The line was consigned through TopX Roma seen here with livestock agent Cody Close.

Mr Douglas said they were largely crossing Simmental bulls over Droughtmaster females in their operation with their breeder herd infused with Glenlands Droughtmaster bloodlines.

A pen of their 21 Droughtmaster cross heifers fetched 302c/kg to weigh 404kg and returned $1222/hd.

Dart Pastoral Trust, Thirlstone, Roma sold 25 Charolais cross and Droughtmaster cross heifers to average 334c/kg weighing 332kg and returned $1109/hd.

A pen of their 18 Charolais cross heifers fetched 322c/kg to weigh 332kg and returned $1069/hd.

The pen saw an increase of two cents on last week’s maximum of 320c/kg in the 330-to-400-kilogram weight range category.

A further pen of their seven Droughtmaster cross heifers sold for 264c/kg to weigh 333kg and returned $1212/hd.

The line was also consigned through TopX Roma.

In the cow job, the 330-to-400-kilogram range reached 260c/kg and averaged 193c/kg. Cows in the 400-to-500-kilogram range topped at 288c/kg to average 258c/kg.

Heavier cows in the 500-to-600-kilogram range topped at 293c/kg, averaging 280c/kg. whereas cows over 600 kilograms topped at 293c/kg and averaged 281c/kg.

The McInnerney family, Combarngo, Yuleba sold Angus cross cows to 290c/kg, reaching a top of $1607 to average $1607.

NLRS Commentary:

Roma Agents yarded 6,293 head with a large number of western bred cattle as well as the normal supply district and South Australia and NSW. All the regular processors feedlotters and backgrounders present and active.The better lines of weaners sold to a dearer trend as did well finished bullocks.

Light weight yearling steers under 200kg made to 352c/kg. Yearling steers 200 to 280kg topping 442c/kg to restockers. Yearling steers 280 to 330kg sold from 300c to 426c/kg. Yearling steers 330 to 400kg also improved in price and made to 394c/kg.Yearling  steers 400 to 480kg sold to 382c/kg to feed. Yearling steers over 480kg made to 362c/kg.

Light weight yearling heifers under 200kg sold to 240c/kg. Yearling heifers 200 to 280kg topped 330c and selling from 200c/kg to average 246c/kg. Yearling heifers 280 to 330kg selling to 334c/kg. Yearling heifers 330 to 400kg sold from 200c to 364c/kg. Yearling heifers 400 to 480kg to feed lost ground and made to 320c/kg. Yearling heifers over 480kg with the majority making to 310c/kg.

Grown steers 400 to 500kg made to 382c to feed with the 500 to 600kg making to 356c/kg to feed. Oats finished bullocks over 600kg sold from 300c to 336c topping 348c/kg. Grown heifers over 540kg sold to 302c/kg to processors.

Another large consignment of cows penned. The 2 score cows 400 to 520kg selling from 218c to 260c/kg. The 3 score cows 520kg and better topped 293c/kg. Heavy bulls over 600kg again sold well to make 306c/kg. Bulls 450 to 600kg however made to 310c and bulls under 450kg made to 330c/kg.

A total of 6,293 head of cattle were consigned at Roma’s Store Sale on Tuesday.

Weaner steers under 200kg topped at 352c/kg and averaged 280c/kg, weaner steers in the 200-280kg range reached 444c/kg and averaged 357c/kg. Steers in the 280-330kg range reached 444c/kg and averaged 369c/kg, and steers in the 330-400kg range reached 394c/kg and averaged 350c/kg. Feeder steers in the 400-500kg range topped at 382c/kg and averaged 351c/kg.

BRF Southern, Breena Plains, St George sold Santa Gertrudis cross steers to 444c/kg, reaching a top of $1,759 to average $1,225.

Luke & Carly Baker, Range Top, Injune sold Santa Gertrudis cross steers to 424c/kg, reaching a top of $1,196 to average $1,196.

Heifers under 200kg topped at 254c/kg and averaged 218c/kg, while heifers in the 200 280kg range topped at 330c/kg and averaged 256c/kg. Heifers in the 280-330kg range topped at 320c/kg, averaging 282c/kg. Heifers in the 330-400kg range topped at 322c/kg, averaging 280c/kg. Heifers in the 400-500kg range topped at 320c/kg, averaging 291c/kg.
