Roma store sale 5 Mar 2019: Cow prices under pressure

Cattle were drawn from a wider supply area and a fair panel of buyers was present and operating.

Over half of the yarding consisted of steers. The quality was mixed and again included younger cattle, evident of the continuing dry season. Prices eased further from last week with cows experiencing the most substantial price falls. Lightweight yearling steers under 280kg to restockers fell by 9c/kg. Medium weight yearling steers under 400kg to feed also fell by 9c/kg. However heavy weight yearling steers to feed rose by 2c/kg.

Lightweight yearling heifers under 280kg to restockers fell between 27c and 28c/kg. Medium weight yearling heifers under 400kg to restockers fell by 20c/kg. Medium weight 2 score cows fell by 27c, while the limited numbers of medium weight 3 score cows fell by 46c/kg. Heavy weight 3 score cows fell by 44c/kg. Lightweight yearling steers under 280kg to restockers sold to 260.2c to average 234c/kg. Medium weight yearling steers under 400kg to feed made to 266.2c to average 248c/kg.

Heavy weight yearling steers to feed sold to a top of 264.2c to average 254c/kg. A sample of quality lightweight yearling heifers under 280kg to background or feed sold to 200.2c to average 200c/kg. Medium weight yearling heifers under 400kg to restockers sold to 211.2c to average 198c/kg. Heavy weight grown steers under 600kg sold to a top of 242.2 to average 242c/kg.

The best of the grown heifers under 540kg made to 200c to average 190c/kg. The largest sample of medium weight 2 score cows sold to 135c to average 122c, while the medium weight 3 score cows made to a top of 162.2c to average 155c/kg. Heavy weight 3 score cows made to 181.2c to average 166c/kg

Weaner steers under 220kg topped at 266c/kg and averaged 208c/kg, weaner steers in the 220-280kg range reached 260c/kg and averaged 221c/kg. Steers in the 280-350kg range reached 266c/kg and averaged 230c/kg, and steers in the 350-400kg range reached 266c/kg and averaged 245c/kg. Feeder steers in the 400-550kg range topping at 264c/kg and averaging 244c/kg.

John Russell, Culbara, Roma sold Charolais cross steers to 266c/kg, reaching a top of $812 to average $537.

IH & SE Johnston, Downsview, Roma sold Charbray steers to 264c/kg, reaching a top of $1,263 to average $1,123.

Yackatoon Grazing Co, Langrantha, Wandoan sold Droughtmaster cross steers to 264c/kg, reaching a top of $1,076 to average $959.

Joy Naish, Coralbyn, Wandoan sold Angus steers to 263c/kg, reaching a top of $751 to average $751.

Wallabella, Wallumbilla sold Angus cross steers to 262c/kg, reaching a top of $940 to average $800.

Riverglen Pastoral Co, Riverglen, Glenmorgan sold Charolais cross steers to 260c/kg, reaching a top of $1,085 to average $1,085.

M & C Redgen, The Rockies, Roma sold Red Brangus steers to 260c/kg, reaching a top of $1,030 to average $966.

JA Henricks, Kilmarnock, Injune sold Angus cross steers to 258c/kg, reaching a top of $964 to average $791. The Angus cross heifers sold to 200c/kg, reaching a top of $723 to average $605.

DH & SBM Campbell, Currawarra, Mitchell sold Santa cross steers to 256c/kg, reaching a top of $1,050 to average $639.

Heifers under 220kg topped at 168c/kg and averaged 136c/kg, while heifers in the 220 – 280kg range topped at 220c/kg and averaged 147c/kg. Heifers in the 280-350kg range topped at 211c/kg, averaging 172c/kg. Heifers in the 350-450kg range topped at 220c/kg, averaging 177c/kg.

John E York, Taunton, Roma sold Santa cross heifers to 211c/kg, reaching a top of $735 to average $643.

EBR & G Underwood, Yarran Downs, Surat sold Angus cross heifers to 200c/kg, reaching a top of $740 to average $672.

Fostoria-Fannon Pty Ltd, Crawney Station, Murrurundi sold Santa heifers to 186c/kg, reaching a top of $576 to average $482.

Cows in the 300-400kg range reached 170c/kg and averaged 77c/kg, while cows in the 400kg-500kg range reached 180c/kg and averaged 119c/kg. Cows over 500kg topped at 181c/kg, averaging 147c/kg.
