Roma sale 7 Dec 2021: More records fall in penultimate sale of year

Despite the continuing rainfall, numbers rose to 4,133 at the Roma Store Sale, up by 1,233 head for the second last sale of the year.

Cattle were mostly drawn from the local supply area and the overall quality varied, but included quality local lines and steers again dominated the yarding.

A solid buying panel was present and operating, including all regular processors.

The market continued to strengthen further with new records set off the back of a much-improved season, with price fluctuations reflective of quality variations.

Light weight steers improved by 44c to 138c/kg. Medium weight steers to restockers improved by 18c to 58c, while heavy weight feeders improved by 11c/kg. Light weight heifers under 280kg to feed improved by 105c, while medium weight heifers to feed improved by 5c to 66c/kg.

Cows eased with medium weight cows down by 16c to 18c, while heavy weight cows fell by 12c to 34c/kg. Light weight yearling steers under 200kg reached a new Roma record of 918.2c to average 918c/kg.

Light weight yearling steers under 280kg to restockers were the largest sample for the day and reached 864.2c to average 795c/kg. Medium weight yearling steers under 330kg to restockers sold to 792.2c to average 717c/kg. Yearling steers under 400kg to restockers made to 682.2c to average 642c/kg. Heavy weight yearling steers to feed reached a top of 654.2c to average 600c/kg.

Light weight yearling heifers under 200kg to restockers reached a top of 750.2c to average 709c/kg. Yearling heifers under 280kg to restockers made to 740.0c to average 682c/kg. Medium weight yearling heifers under 330kg to restockers sold to 724.2c to average 654c/kg. Yearling heifers under 400kg to restockers reached a top of 652.2c to average 541c/kg.

The best of the grown steers made to 469.2c to average 467c/kg.

The largest sample of grown heifers made to 465.0 to average 464c/kg.

A run of red tag PTIC cows to restockers made to a top of 448.2c to average 434c/kg. Medium weight prime cows made to a top of 403.2c/kg. Heavy weight 3 score cows reached a top of 397.2c to average 391c/kg. The limited numbers of heavy weight 4 score prime cows made to a top of 399.2c to average 395c/kg.

The best of the heavy weight bulls to feed reached a top of 400.2c to average 397c/kg.

Cows and calves were yarded in reduced numbers and reached a top of $2820/unit.
