Just shy of 8000 head of cattle were offloaded at Roma Saleyards with dearer trends reflected across several categories.

Continuing off the back of a bumper few weeks, the yarding consisted of quality lines of heavier weaner and feeder steers, and prime conditioned cows.

Over 2500 cows were offloaded with regular processors in solid attendance.

MAA Livestock and Property agent Seamus Filan said the market reflected a dearer trend this week with quality steer lines influencing the yarding.

“The steers jumped considerably on last week,” he said.

“The lighter to middle of the range weaner steers jumped 15 to 20 cents on last week, whereas the feeder and heavier 400-to-500-kilogram steers jumped 30 to 40 cents.”

Based in the Maranoa region, Talbot Schwennesen, Warkon offloaded a total of 322 Angus and Angus, Charolais and Droughtmaster crossbred steers to average 384c/kg at 431-kilograms to return an average of $1654 per head.

The offload saw an increase of six cents on last week’s maximum of 378c/kg in the 400-to 500-kilogram weight range category.

Targeting the feeder market, 12 pens of Warkon steers sold for a straight 385c/kg.

A pen of 25 Angus steers sold for 385c/kg to weigh 493kg and return $1899/hd.

A pen of 28 Charolais crossbred steers fetched 385c/kg to weigh 455kg and return $1752/hd.

A further pen of 28 Droughtmaster crossbred steers sold for 385c/kg at 436kg to return $1680/hd.

The line was consigned through Elders Roma seen here with agent Campbell Duff.

Mr Filan attributed the excellent season to the quality lines of steers being offloaded.

“A lot of people are weaning at this time of year, so the weaners are all coming off,” he said.

“It’s been such a great season and the weaners have got a fair bit of weight in them this year.

“There are plenty of weaners out there between the 320 to 350-and 360-kilogram mark.”

Ross and Jeannie Delacour of Dunkeld, Mitchell offloaded 269 Brahman and Charolais cross steers to average 282c/kg in their annual turnoff.

A pen of their Brahman cross steers sold for 296c/kg to weigh 425kg and return $1259/hd.

A further pen of their Charolais crossbred steers fetched 350c/kg to weigh 339kg and return $1187/hd.

The line was consigned through MAA Livestock and Property seen here with Mitchell agent Seamus Filan.

Noting the heifer market, Mr Filan said the current prices were on trend with last week’s returns.

“A lot of our heifers sitting at around 270 to 310 cents with exceptional lines and a bit of weight there getting from 310 to 320 cents.”

The Russell family of Wodonga, Mungallala sold Charolais cross heifers to average 314c/kg at 273kg and returned $859/hd.

A pen of their 11 Charolais crossbred heifers reached 320c/kg to weigh 330kg and return $1056/hd.

The line was consigned through Watkins and Company.
