Roma store sale 30 July 2019: Firm market for 8147 head

Cattle numbers remained steady with another larger yarding of 8147 head at the Roma Store Sale off the back of the stronger market in recent weeks.

Cattle were mostly drawn from the local supply area and Western Queensland.

A good panel of buyers was present and operating with the continued presence of interstate buyers.

Steers and heifers were yarded in equal portions while cows were also present in higher numbers similar to the previous week.

The overall quality of the yarding varied.

Feedlot and restocker competition was strong for quality lines.

Light weight yearling steers under 280 kg to restockers improved by 4c to 14c/kg. Light weight yearling steers under 330kg rose by 4c to 14c/kg. Heavy weight yearling steers over 400kg to feed improved by 11c/kg. Light weight yearling heifers under 280kg to restockers fell by 10c/kg.

Medium weight yearling heifers under 400 kg to feed fell by 18c/kg though heavy weight yearling heifers over 400kg to feed rose by 11c/kg. Medium weight 2 and 3 score cows both fell by 5c/kg. Heavy weight 3 score cows fell by 4c whilst heavy weight 4 score cows fell by 7c/kg.

A good sample of light weight yearling steers under 280 kg to background sold to 316.2c, to average 303c/kg. Medium weight yearling steers under 400kg to feed sold to 322.2c, to average 306 c/kg.

The best of the heavy weight yearling steers over 400kg to feed sold to 316.2c, to average 309kg. A large sample of lightweight yearling heifers under 280kg to restockers made to 262.2c, to average 235 c/kg. Medium weight yearling heifers under 400kg to feed sold to 282.2c, to average 269 c/kg. Heavy weight yearling heifers over 400kg to feed made to 278.2c, to average 262 c/kg.

The largest sample of the grown steers sold to 285.2c to average 285 c/kg.

Grown heifers made to 289.2c, to average 242 c/kg.

Medium weight 2 score cows sold to 213.2c, to average 193 c/kg, whilst medium weight 3 score cows reached 237.2c, to average 225 c/kg. Heavy weight 3 score cows made to 239.2c, to average 230 c/kg, and the heavy weight 4 score cows sold to 244.2c, to average 239 c/kg. The best of the heavy weight bulls made to a top of 296.2c to average 287 c/kg.

Weaner steers under 220kg topped at 308c/kg and averaged 276c/kg, weaner steers in the 220-280kg range reached 316c/kg and averaged 287c/kg.

Steers in the 280- 350kg range reached 322c/kg and averaged 293c/kg, and steers in the 350-400kg range reached 320c/kg and averaged 303c/kg.

Feeder steers in the 400-550kg range topping at 316c/kg and averaging 294c/kg.

Cows and calves hit $900/unit.

G & L Smith, Iona, Wallumbilla sold Romagnola cross steers to 316c/kg, reaching a top of $1,293 to average $1,153.
