Roma sale 3 May 2022: Numbers down after short week

Yarding 2753 Change -1333

Numbers fell to 2,753 at the Roma Store sale, down by 1,333 head, owing mostly to another short week and rainfall further inland.

Cattle were predominantly drawn from the local supply area, and the overall quality was very good, with steers accounting for half of the yarding. A larger buying panel was present and operating, including all regular processors. The market improved across most steers categories due to the quality yarding and reduced numbers, while heifers fluctuated and cows eased slightly. Light weight steers under 280kg improved by 30c, while medium weight steers improved by 21c to 49c/kg. Heavy weight steers to feed improved by 5c/kg. Light weight heifers under 280kg improved by 22c, while medium weight heifers to feed improved by 20c to 34c/kg. Heavy weight cows improved by 2c to 5c/kg.

The limited numbers of light weight yearling steers under 200kg sold to a top of 750.2c to average 738c/kg. Yearling steers under 280kg to restockers made to 768.2c to average 715c/kg. Medium weight yearling steers under 330kg to restockers sold to 708.2c to average 674c/kg. Yearling steers under 400kg to restockers made to 698.2c to average 632c/kg. Heavy weight yearling steers to feed reached a top of 584.2c to average 523c/kg. Light weight yearling heifers under 200kg to restockers were also in limited supply and made to 650.2c to average 631c/kg. Yearling heifers under 280kg to restockers made to 650.2c to average 627c/kg. Medium weight yearling heifers under 330kg to restockers sold to 622.2c to average 602c/kg. Yearling heifers under 400kg to restockers reached a top of 614.2c to average 577c/kg. Heavy weight yearling heifers to restockers also made to 614.2c to average 557c/kg.

Grown steers were yarded in reduced numbers with medium weight grown steers reaching 417.2c to average 417c/kg. Grown heifers under 540kg made to 410.2c to average 410c/kg. PTIC cows to restockers made to a top of 370.2c/kg. Medium weight prime cows made to 376.2c to average 366c/kg while heavy weight prime cows reached a top of 380.2c to average 367c/kg. Heavy weight bulls made to 378.2c to average 355c/kg. Cows and calves were yarded in reduced numbers and sold to a top of $3,150/unit.

Weaner steers under 220kg topped at 768c/kg and averaged 706c/kg, weaner steers in the 220-280kg range reached 762c/kg and averaged 708c/kg. Steers in the 280-350kg range reached 708c/kg and averaged 655c/kg, and steers in the 350-400kg range reached 688c/kg and averaged 543c/kg. Feeder steers in the 400-550kg range topping at 604c/kg and averaging 513c/kg.

Cows and calves hit $3,150/unit.

Matt Lister, Hillview, Roma sold Angus steers to 742c/kg reaching a top of $1,874 to average $1,818.

AB & JM Cosh, Elray, Injune sold Droughtmaster cross steers to 732c/kg reaching a top of $1,696 to average $1,696.

AJ & SJ Smith, Openbah, St George sold Simmental cross steers to 730c/kg reaching a top of $2,245 to average $1,961.

JS & EM Campbell, Claravale, Mitchell sold Charolais cross steers to 714c/kg reaching a top of $1,982 to average $1,831.

Cows in the 300-400kg range reached 250c/kg and averaged 211c/kg, while cows in the 400kg-500kg range reached 370c/kg and averaged 330c/kg. Cows over 500kg topped at 394c/kg, averaging 349c/kg.
