Roma Saleyards market report – Tuesday, 3 December
Yarding: 3391 Change: -883
Despite another rain impacted yarding at Roma Saleyards this week, the overall quality remained strong and prices solid.
The recent local and much welcomed rainfall gave producers and the market a boost of confidence with some categories recording increases of up to 20 cents.
A total of just over 3300 head of cattle were offered with firm to dearer prices reflected across most categories.
The yarding included several lines of quality mid-weight to heavy steers, which attracted a strong presence of buyers, including the regular processors, backgrounders and feedlotters.
Cattle were sourced primarily from the local Maranoa and western regions, including areas such as Hungerford, Quilpie, Cunnamulla, Winton, Cooladdi and Longreach among others.
The Flower family made a notable impact in this week’s sale, offloading a total of 568 Santa Gertrudis, Hereford and Angus cross steers.
Their steers averaged 417c/kg, weighing 371kg and returned an average of $1548 per head.
Based at Garrabarra, Roma, the family operates a primarily breeding enterprise across their Maranoa blocks, including Callitris North based at Condamine.
Cam and Sarah Flower, along with their daughter Jacqui and Cam’s mother Row, were all present at today’s sale, which formed part of their annual turnoff.
All 21 pens on offer sold for over 400c/kg, with the top two fetching 446c/kg. Three other pens sold for 430c/kg.

A further pen of their 30 Angus cross steers sold for 408c/kg, weighing 382kg and returned $1558/hd.
The steers were snapped up by an active buying panel selling into both backgrounder and feeder markets.
The line was consigned through MAA Livestock and Property seen here with vendors Jacqui and Row Flower.
Vendor Dan York, Wattle Park, Wallumbilla also capitalised on the market boost selling 10 Simbrah cross steers and 17 Simbrah cross heifers.
The commercial producer focused on both breeding and fattening within his operation, targeting the heavier end of the feeder market by growing cattle out to feeder weight.
Mr Cross said favourable market prices was the reason behind today’s offload with the Simbrah breed returning ideal weight for age.
The 15-to-16-month-old steers sold for 392c/kg, weighing 458kg and returned an average of $1796/hd.
Meanwhile, the heifers averaged 332c/kg, weighing 378kg and returned an average of $1255 per head.
