Yarding: 5500 Change: -490

With a warm start to the week, Roma agents yarded just over 5,600 head of cattle at Tuesday’s sale.

Several quality lines and large offerings were on offer under the hammer today with all regular processors, feedlotters and backgrounders present and actively bidding throughout the day.

With the laneways packed and competitive, prices were firm on last week’s sale, with an upwards of 20c plus in some categories.

The yarding featured cattle consigned primarily from the local Maranoa supply district, including Roma, Mitchell, Morven, Taroom, Injune and Wallumbilla.

Cattle were also drawn from as far afield as Boulia and Quilpie in the west and Cloncurry, Julia Creek and McKinlay in the north.

Andrew and Katie Crowther of AK Grazing, ‘Austral Park’ in the Arcadia Valley offloaded a large run of 222 Angus cross steers as well as Charolais cross and Santa Gertrudis cross steers to average 429c/kg weighing 316kg for a return of $1,355/hd.

Part of their annual turnoff, the family operation sold two pens for a straight 452c/kg weighing at 278kg to make $1,590/hd.

A further two pens of Angus cross steers fetched a straight 412c/kg for an average weight of 358kg to earn $1,475/hd.

The line was consigned through Nutrien, seen here with Rockhampton agent, Trent McKinlay and the Crowther family, Katie, Andrew and son Edward.

NLRS Commentary:

Numbers fell by 400 to 5,500 head of cattle at the Roma sale this week. Overall quality was good with some exceptional locally bred lines of steers and heifers on offer, alongside a fair portion of cattle from the north west of the state. The majority of competition for medium weight steers and heifers came from local orders however heavy feeder steers met solid demand from northern NSW.

Light weight restockers steers remained firm selling to 466.2c to average 432c, 280 to 330kg steers made to 480.2c to average 17c better at 433c and those steers 330 to 400 kg returning to the paddock improved by 27c, selling to 488.2c to average 408c/kg. Medium weight feeder steers averaged 16c better at 391c while a pen of well bred British steers to feed over 400kg topped at 428.2c with most around 384c, up 26c/kg.

Restocker heifers 280 to 330kg followed a similar trend improving by 22c to a top of 368.2c to average 340c, medium weight heifers to feed sold to 368.2c to average 336c and good quality pregnancy tested empty feeder heifers over 400kg also made to a top of 368.2c averaging 317c/kg.

Heavy prime cattle saw significant improvements on previous weeks with southern export orders targeting well finished pens of young bullocks and heavy weight cows. Grown steers over 600kg saw a lift of 21c to 375c to average 345c with those to feed selling to 358.2c/kg. Medium weight 3 score cows sold to a top of 300.2c to average 278c and cows over 520kg gained up to 43c for those in prime condition selling to an isolated 330c with most around 306c. Best of the cows and calves sold to $2000/unit.
